So I did a little research and found that PROGRAMMING a key does require special equipment. The process involves both the FOB and car's computer:
If you buy a used key off EBAY, there's another step required to erase the key before reprogramming it:
The equipment isn't cheap so it's not cost-effective as a DIY but this guy (no affiliation) does it for $170 which I believe is less than what dealers charge. He only does 2010-2018 keys. In situations like mine where a previously working key stops working, you may only need to re-sync it, which is a DIY. Mine synced back up by just opening the door with the physical key and starting the car. So if your key stops working, try that first - it's free.
