I just made up a low cost phone adaptor that allows you to use one of those holders that fits into your vents, but without putting it onto your vent fins.
it is made from a U section piece of plastic that came on an olde document holder. Any plastic that is thin enough to fit between the centre console and the trim piece will do - circa 1 - 2mm thickness.
took about half an hour to make up, can be fitted and removed in seconds, requires no glue, screws etc to hold it in place. The two pieces fit at 90 degrees to the front face of the console and 45 degrees respectively and the weight of the phone and gravity hold it in place. I have not tried it after a spirited drive, but is seems solid enough.
