Default Porsche 981S prices are going up

I was pleased to look at https://www.autotrader.co.uk/ here in the UK and noticed that Porsche 981S prices are going up.

Fourwheel Trader over on YT did a recent Boxster/Cayman analysis:

Essentially the 981 base and S prices increased 10-11% year-over-year for 2019/20, while GTS prices saw a 6% bump; prices for the respective 718 models were 11%, 4%, and 2%. So if you're—for whatever reason—in the market for a 4-pot 718 GTS, it's actually not a bad time.

All used car prices are increasing right now. Consumer Reports states that, "...prices in used-car listings for May 2021 on TrueCar’s website so far are up 32 percent over the same time last year."

Wow!! 32% is crazy. Everything bubble or truly shortage?

Side-note. I’m seeing a lot of low mileage 992s on the market. Some sitting well over a month. Why are owners giving them up so early? 991.1s and 981s are getting extremely thin along with appreciation. Think it’s an NA ******-up? I’m thinking a shift is playing a role in the slice somewhere. Not sure if it’s all apples to apples. I noticed BMW e46 M3s also going through the roof. Wish I still had mine. Not for value but rather; what an amazing NA experience.

Basic supply and demand with a kind of a domino effect mixed in...A major factor is the chip shortage causing a shortage of new vehicles which is pushing people who put off buying new last year to shop for used cars this year. With fewer new cars being purchased, the supply of trade-in used cars has been diminished thereby driving prices up. Also, car rental companies sold off a massive amount of inventory during the pandemic, resulting in a shortage of cars to rent now. So, those companies are not only holding on to their current inventory, but also buying up new cars to replenish their inventory. There are a couple of articles on Jalopnik and The Drive that address this pretty thoroughly.

EDIT: This from yesterday... https://www.thedrive.com/news/40739/...car-production

I'm selling my wife's 2016 GTI for $20,500 this Friday. We only paid 28,500 for it because there were crazy incentives during the whole diesel gate thing. Sticker on it was close to $35K new, but wow that car became cheap to own. There's a huge shortage of cars in general right now. Also sports cars more in demand with remote work and COVID. I'm sure I could sell my 2013 BS for good money but have no interested. It's white, black interior, sport chrono, pse, 20" wheels, sport wheel, heated and cooled seats, Bose, Nav, manual trans and 30K miles

Just checked on value of my '15 C-S (PDK, nicely optioned) and surprised to see that average trade-in (to dealer) value is about 3% higher than what I paid for the car 18 months ago. And average private-party sale price is almost 10% higher. Will be interesting to see how this fluctuates after (if?) auto industry challenges with inventory, chips, etc. no longer exist.

What kind of options if you don't mind me asking? I have a 14CS with full leather interior, pdk, sc, pse, sport design steering wheel and 25k miles. Not interested in selling, just curious about the value of your car.

If you’re asking me, it doesn’t matter. Only other car I would ever trade or sell for is another Cayman like a 718 GTS or GT4 and that is not happening for a very long time.

Same here. I was offered a great price for my 2013 981S but when I checked out the prices of Porsches, I decided it was best if I just kept my current car. A local dealer has a used low mileage GT4 for sale for only a $130K. And of course no one is discounting.

The information should be valuable to anyone looking to trade-up to something else... or the info should be valuable to anyone looking to purchase a used Cayman right now... knowing what the market is doing is always a good thing -- selling or buying.

It's crazy to think that low mile high optioned S are going for mid 60's now with some prices into the 70's. Really thinking of selling my unicorn and returning once things settle down.
