Hesitation in 2nd/3rd Gear When Cold

I bought a 2012 Cayman R (manual) about three months ago with 49K miles. I've noticed when the car is cold it has a "hiccup" or two after shifting into 2nd and 3rd, unless I am *very* slow giving it throttle. Once the car is warm - after just 2-3 minutes of driving, it's fine and I can accelerate without any hesitation. Is this common or a sign of a transmission issue?

It’s not normal but I’m not sure it would be transmission related.
Vollig Autowerks has some great expertise on these cars, you might reach out to them and schedule a visit.

Andy, I totally get that too! I have a 981 S manual. Hmmm, I was thinking maybe carbon build up at the throttle body creating airflow issues during the cold startup. I haven't checked though. But you are not alone.

Interesting. These are all direct-injection cars, so carbon buildup on the intake valves could be an issue. The mixture is rich on cold-start, wonder if there is any backflow on the intake that's saturating the carbon deposits, resulting in a rich mixture until they heat up and burn any residual gas off...

Not sure if it's the same thing you are describing but my 2012 2.9L (no DFI) 6MT kinda does the same thing. When it's cold, as in full cold, temp gauge hasn't moved, there is a sad flat spot in the power band between 2 and 3K RPM. I'm not flooring it or anything like that, and I keep the revs below 3500 until the car is fully warmed up. The flat spot is super noticable, no bucking, no noticable misfires, just that the car really feels like it doesn't want to go. My mechanic noted a fault code for the valve timing sensors that he cleared. Other than that car checked out AOK. Not sure if the flat spot was related to that or not and I haven't really driven the car since I got it back. Once the car is warmed up it runs like a top.

I've noticed the same thing on my base 981, a brief hesitation between 2 and 3k rpm that seems to only happen once after a cold start. There's also an annoying surge between 2.5 and 3.5k when the cam profile changes under light throttle which is always there but more noticeable when the engines cold.

Yeah, 2.5-3K is apparently where the variable cam timing kicks in on the 9A1, and sometimes I can feel it as a slight hesitation. If it's doing it consistently when cold I suppose it could be a sticky solenoid of some kind, or just the thickness of the oil. You running a 0W40?
Could also be the start of the clutch slipping, I suppose. If that's the issue you'll probably know soon enough.

Any updates on this? Anybody fix this issue? Throttle body cleaning seems like a possibility.
