Default First Oil Change - 981 S (3.4) Indy Cost?

Hi Guys,

So it's about that time for my first oil change in my 14' 981 S. As I start calling around, I want to have an idea of what some of you pay for your oil changes (independent shop, of course). Dearlership quoted $475 here in the Bay Area, so no way I' doing that lol. Anyways, what's your cost, on average from your indy?

Also if you are in the Bay Area, where do you take yours and how has your experience been with them? Thanks!

J

You can buy the oil from Walmart for approx $50. Mobil 1 0W-40

You can buy the filter Mahle OX366D for about $20 on Amazon or elsewhere online.

So you can do it yourself for about $70.

But if you want someone else to do it for you they have to make a living. So double the cost of parts = $140. Plus an hour labor @ approx $100/hr

So I think a reasonable price would be around the $250 mark.

Surely they make there living from the labour charge and not ripping off the customer with inflated parts prices, happy to pay labour but that’s why people use Indus to a vapid the markups

If using an Indy, make certain they are well aware of the sensitive Electronic Oil Gauge .
Find out what their strategy is to avoid the dreaded "overfill".

Edit: Search this Forum for "Oil Level"... hours of reading pleasure.

My Indy charges $60 and lets me bring my own oil and filter. I use Mobil 1 5W50 for summer DEs. Look for sales by NAPA at $6/qt. If you DIY make sure you have a large open drain container, The close top pans with a small hole splash oil. I pour that container into another for disposal. By far the messiest is removing the oil filter. I put a large inverted plastic bag over my hand. I normally add 6.5 quarts and top off later.

Huh? You're speaking in tongues here..

They normally don't double the parts charges (and stay in business) - but you can expect to pay full retail. They get a discount on the parts from the vendors/wholesalers - but they also have to do the billing, stocking, payments - all take time/space and they deserve to be reimbursed for it.

$475 for an oil change? A dealer quoted me $250. $100 for parts and rest is labor.

If you want you can negotiate with the dealer. Ask them for a breakdown of what they are charging you (Oil change should be a 1 hour job). Once you feel that the parts are priced correctly, negotiate on the labor. If you have a quote from an indy shop see if they can match it. They probably won't be able to match but they should bring the price down.

If you are going for an indy shop you should also ask for a breakdown on what they are charging you. Indy shops will offer cheaper labor and they might be using cheaper parts. Make sure they are using quality parts!

$250 - $350 depending on the brand of oil you choose and where you live. Labor rates will always be higher in cities with high rent and high labor costs.

Retail for Mobil 1 is about $9.00 qt. X 9 = $81

List price for the oil filter is about $25.

Labor is $100

$206 plus tax

I read it as "his" first oil change, not the cars.

LOL---- MY first oil change as the owner, not the car's! sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for info everyone, I'll see what I can get around here. I would do it myself but I don't have a garage or even a driveway, so for now, I'll have someone do it for me.

I see you are in the East Bay. You can try Kahler's in Dublin. I've had my oil done once there, and I think it was around $250. I've been DIY'ing the changes on my own though lately.
