Posted this on planet-9, but thought you guys might be interested in this too. I wanted to change out the sport design wheel of my new to me 981 Boxster S to something newer.
After some research, I found that the newest steering wheels aren't compatible with the 981 and older cars. Porsche updated the wiring in the newer cars. However, thanks to Paul at https://gpsadapter.us it is now possible to use these steering wheels.
I purchased a new macan wheel on ebay along with a new airbag. (the new wheel uses a different/smaller airbag) and got the correct adapter from gpsadapter.
The install was pretty painless. I've installed everything and the paddles work great. Without any car coding, probably 80% of the multi-function is already working. I need to bring my car to the shop next week and have them enable the multifunction support via PIWIS for things like button programming. (Paul provides a detailed step by step for the dealer to follow)
The only feature that won't work on the wheel is the steering wheel heating. It's possible to make it work, but it's more involved and you need to buy a couple additional things like a new clock spring. I just didn't think it was worth it.
I think it looks great and really finishes off the interior. The wheel itself is really comfortable and the paddles feel firmer and have a shorter throw. All around, I'm really happy with the mod.
Here are a before and after shot and a side by side comparison of the two wheels.
Nice. I wonder how much easier (or harder) it would be to switch over from the standard 981S (heated) MF wheel?
According to Paul at gps, it would be easier. Assuming you got a macan heated/multi function wheel, the heating would just plug right in and his adapter would handle the multi function. I would need to buy a new clock spring since my car didn't have a heated wheel.
I imagine everything would just work, though you'd probably have to get the car programmed to support the paddle shifters which is a pretty standard thing for a dealer to do.
It'd definitely be worth verifying with him if you were interested. For someone still has their multi function wheel because they didn't want to lose the functionality when switching to paddles, this would be the best of both worlds.
It looks awesome! I am thinking of doing same thing.
Could I ask how much did it cost?
Is Macan/ 991.2 steering wheel same?
Where did you buy steering wheel and airbag?
That looks really good. Shame it's so much $$, between the wheel, airbag, and adapter. Probably ~$1,500 total, right? I don't think I could personally justify that for just a wheel, even though I would greatly prefer it. That's 1.5-2 track weekends, depending on whether I'm camping.
So, I have a '13 w a multifunction heated steering wheel (manual, not PDK) - what /are/ the options - I do consider losing heated function a no-go... I also have a Macan S now and I do like that steering wheel...
So...I am VERY interested in this mod... I've had my 2015 boxster s for 7 years... and I think this will be my first mod...
I'm keen to add the heated macan gts wheel with PDK.... but
My only remaining questions;
1. does the macan wheel have an indicator for launch control...? My current wheel (same as the 1st post in this thread) has this so hoping not to lose that...
2. I'm thinking of using the gpsadapter to be use the macan wheel with the sport mode selector on it.. anyone has experience 'living with' that for a while?
I am looking to do this model on my 2005 Boxster 987.1 Base I already swapped the wheel out for one with the multifunction buttons and dealership programed it successfully. I can get one from a 911/987 Cayman 2011 but it is a sport pdk. Putting on a manual so I do not need paddle shifter controls, but from what I am reading here it sounds like it will work.
