Odometer not working, not gears
My odometer in my 92 968 has stopped working. I thought it was the gears. But to my surprise they were ok. I replaced them since I already bought new ones. Odometer obviously still not working. I guess it is something electrical. Any ideas on how to proceed?

I believe Raj intended to say that the speedo signal comes from the wheel speed sensor. Drivers front sensor IIRC. If the speedo indicates speed but doesn't accrue miles then the issue is in the speedo head. Probably no solution other than some used speedo head parts

Check to see that the reset "button" is not hung up. If the reset button continues to engage the electric reset switch, the odometer will not accrue miles until the button releases.

I've posted this before but I have talked to North Hollywood Speedometer on various 968 and 993 cluster questions and they have told me if its not the gears its the stepper motor that dies. I looked at a 993 years ago with the same issue and they said the stepper motor on 968/993 cars is a pretty common problem. The cost to send it out to them for repair is very reasonable and is usually less than the cost of a used cluster. I've sent them work over the years and a friend recently sent them an E30 cluster for gear repair and to recalibrate the tach/speedo. Their work and customer service is top notch.

I had the stepper motor die on the cluster in my 944S. Gear was in perfect condition but odometer would intermittently die before finally giving up the ghost permanently. Swapped in a known-good speedometer fixed the problem.

I ran into the same issue as you..... installed a new set of gears and it did not work. i only had one tooth missing off the small gear that was driven off the step motor and couldn't find it in the assembly. kinda frustrated and kinda pissed, i took the cluster out to look again and decided to install the older larger gear of the two, even though they looked the same.
it started working so i didn't question it.
spending a Hamilton for two little pieces of plastic is the only time i have questioned my sanity.

Before I forget, the other (and likely more common problem) is a crack in the worm gear from the stepper motor. If there is a crack which goes completely through the gear, it won't retain enough tension on the stepper motor shaft to allow it to turn the odometer gear. I attempted to repair my cracked worm gear with super glue but it wasn't sufficient to maintain proper tension of the gear on the shaft. In the end, I just swapped stepper motors from another cluster and all was good.
