Air con question..?

Default Air con question..?

Today I took my new (to me) 968 to the shop to have the air con recharged as it didn't blow cold at all. Shortly after the shop informed me that the condenser was leaking and I need a new one.

So I have two questions..

1 - Is the condenser unique for the 968, or does the condenser from
other models/cars fit.?

2 - How much is involved to do a DIY condenser replacement.? Can I
do it myself or do I need to take it to the shop.? I am reasonably
handy with tools and the system is completely empty of R134.

I see no reason why you couldn't replace it yourself, when done, bring it back to the AC shop and have them evacuate the system and then load in the correct weight of R134A

92s are R12 and 93 up is 134A. Griffiths sells kits with the receiver/dehydrator which should be replaced if the system has been open.

The technician may flush or pressurize the system with an inert gas to find leaks then pull a vacuum to find smaller leaks and boil off the residual moisture.

Thanks guys.. The aircon has already been converted to 134A last year and had a new compressor fitted at the same time. The tech did a test for leaks with a flouro dye that reveiled excactly where the condenser were leaking.

So for now its a question of finding a new condenser and get it fitted, hence my questions in my first post. In my search it seems like some has had succes with fitting a newer and more efficient condenser from another car brand, it just didn't say which one. And new ones for the 968 seems much more expensive then for the 911 for some strange reason, so I was hoping that other cars/porsche models uses the same or similar condenser for better options.

I would imagine the 944's are the same. I have changed a couple of 944's and remember it being a tight fit. I have doubts that any other would fit properly but I might be wrong.

Thank you for that griffiths link, very helpful and it explains exactly how removal is done. So now I just need to order a new condenser and get it installed..

And the part number for the '92 condenser (and some other A/C components) differs from the '93 - '95. This is likely because when R 134 was brought into the marketplace, we (the automotive industry) were told that R 134 needed a more efficient condenser to dissipate heat as well as R 12. The condensers are physically identical and swap out with no issues.

I have a '93 condenser in my conveted (to R 134) '92. This was done because my '92 condenser was leaking and I had an extra '93 condenser - not because I was concerned about the heat exchange. But if I were in need of a condenser for a '92 I would opt for the '93 version.

Thanks, and that is what I did too.. Ordered a new condenser for the newer models designed for R134a. Both the compressor and drier was changed/converted last year, so with a new condenser I will hopefully have nice cold A/C.

When its here I will take some photos while replacing it, in case others are interested in seeing how much work is involved.
