From what I have seen the 968 unit is the same at the later post 85.5 944 except it has a detent pot for the temperature. The earlier 85.5+ 944 versions of this device are larger but the bulk is hidden in the dash and at some point they made the AC switch replaceable without desoldering. I think by 1988 (and maybe 1987) the unit is the newer style except for that detent pot which appeared on the 968. I swapped a 944S2 unit into my black 968.
