Default Hood inserts ?

I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any hood inserts for underneath the hood for insulation. I've seen some 944's that have some sort of insulation under there. Is there a reason why they were not installed on the 968's from factory?

I don't know if there is any kind of insulation that is cut for the 968, but you can get it for the 928 and cut to match. However, the insulation increases the heat soaking and lessens the heat extraction of the system without providing much sound benefit. The 968 is a rather quiet engine when setup right, and the hood insulation doesn't seem needed to me. It also absorbs fluids, and tend to smell after a few years. I'll pass.

The under-hood insulation on my 944S was pretty nasty and degraded after a while, so I'm glad I don't have it on the 968.

Thanks for the input guys. I can do without it. I was just wondering because I noticed my hood is starting to get a slight fading in the paint and thought this might help or at least slow it down.

Fading is on the right side of the hood above the valve cover.

Classic9 Leather has a Hood Liner that holds up good. Check it out at the link below. I have this in my 944 and the hood is much cooler to the touch.

Heat on that side would be coming from the exhaust header. Get a heat shield installed and you'll minimize the heat getting to your hood, with the added benefit of protecting your heater control valve and hall sender connector, both of which get crumbly after heat soaking too many times.

Thanks guys, I will try the heat shield first and see what happens.

I wonder if maybe the very best solution would be to get the exhaust header ceramic coated and/or wrapped with that high temp cloth wrap. I think there is an outfit in OKC that does ceramic coating. I believe it would be pretty hard to effectively wrap the header while it is still attached.

The heat shield is cheap and takes about 10 minutes to install. I've never done the wrap so I can't comment on the cost or time to complete that, interesting idea though.

I've got the heat shield, and can vouch for its effectiveness - really cools things down underhood. And I've also have my exhaust manifold ceramic coated, by Swain Tech in New York, iirc. It cost $225, but I haven't fired up the engine yet to know how much additional cooling benefit it offers. I agree with Tama that the heat shield is a cheap and effective solution to high temperatures on the exhaust side.

Couple weeks ago dropped in at Oklahoma Foreign and picked up a spare exhaust header for the 968. Left it with Jet-Hot in OKC to coated with their Extreme 2500 in light gray color to better match the aluminum bits. I was told that the 2500 would lower the under hood temps by 45%. I went with that for the maximum heat reduction. Their 2000 was supposed to have a reduction of about 35%. I was quoted $285 for the 2000 and $315 for the 2500. Definitely not inexpensive.

This will be another one of those upgrades that I install one of these days when I get to doing all of the leaking seals and stuff under there. Little by little getting the parts together. Probably like most of you guys,.......while you are under there doing that,..... might as well do.....?

Would you like to buy / trade hoods, I have a parts car with excellent paint the same color.

Been out awhile, cheers to all,
Mike

I like the heat shield idea. Where do I get one?
