Default Just Failed Inspection - Missing Air Pump?

Just failed North Carolina state inspection for "Air Injection System". The tech says that the air pump is missing. I can't find any reference in the shop manual or anywhere else that this car has an air pump. Anyone know where this should be, if it exists?

thanks,
-kb

There is no air pump on the 968, he has confused your car with a 928.

Thanks, they had some sheet stating that all Porsches from from '93 should have one. I'll see if I can get the dealer to provide some kind of official statement.

9ines - 968gene lives in your area and his car has passed more than once with no hassle. And no, 968s were not fitted with secondary air pumps. Perhaps Gene could PM you which station did his car and they could do yours? They appear to be more familiar with the model.

Nope, that would be OBD2 requirement, not OBD1, which is what our cars are. They don't have SAI pumps.

Sorry for the late response. All new 968s had a portable air pump in the back, on the left side. I have never heard of anyone checking for this during an inspection. Sounds like a Porsche joke to me.

Ernie, he is speaking of the tire inflating pump that plugs into the cigar lighter.

Don, you are just further confusing people . They are talking about a smog related air pump, not a tire inflator!

Raj,

Hey, I never said I was a wrench - lol! But now I know that the 928 has an internal air pump and the 968 has a portable air pump in the rear storage area! For anyone needing a portable 968 air pump, they may have them at the Hershey Swap Meet on April 21.

Don, you are still not getting it, lol. This thread was related to secondary air injection pump, which was something that was installed on all OBD2 compliant cars. 968's did not fall into this category. The inspector failed him because he did not have this Air Injection Pump. It's an air pump to reduce emissions during cold starts.
This is just too funny...

Raj,

Not sure why you think the air injection pump reduced missions, assume you meant emissions? This is just too funny...

Look forward to discussing my lack of wrenching skills with you further in Hershey in 4 weeks - lol!

Don
