Default Help me decide on 18" wheels

I've been planning to get 18" wheels forever but haven't been ready to pull the trigger but soon I think that I will. Here are the choices:

1) New 3.6 Speedlines
pros: no explanation necessary
cons: $6k, delicate finish requiring relatively frequent refinishing, moderate weight

2) Used 3.6 Speedlines
pros: $3k
cons: same as new ones except probably requiring refinish now for $1-2k

3) New RH wheels
pros: $3k, same styling as 3.6 Speedlines
cons: heavy weight, some have claimed easy to bend

4) New Kerscher wheels
pros: $3k, similar styling as 3.6 Speedlines, lighter weight and stronger
cons: no name recognition so harder to sell if necessary, longer lead time, and not exactly the same styling as speedlines because of non-rounded lug holes and 7 fasteners per spoke instead of 8

The RHs are stronger than what I see on the boards, I did eventually bend two of them but that impact would have bent any 3 piece wheel. As far as weight goes, mine were along the lines of 58lbs with tires in the rear and 52-54lbs with tires in the front. I don't remember which tires were on there but obviously your choice will effect the weight but I do not believe they are any heavier than the Speedlines.

Just remember the 18s will decrease your ride comfort if that is important to you. I'm sure you remember that from previous 968s you have owned.

true that if he runs 30s back there. 35s not so much. 275-35-18s give a 99.9 % accurate speedo when new.

when new, 285-35s are about 1/4" larger in diameter than ideal. but the issue goes away after a bit of wear.

I have the RHs on my 930. I have had no problems, wish they were only 3k new, more like 4k plus shipping.

I like fiske on the 968 IMHO...

Cheers, mike

I prefer the RH or Speedline's styling. I don't think I'll ever buy used wheels again, unless it was an offer I couldn't refuse or a hard to find style/brand. Once I bought a used set that had one bent wheel that was undetectable until I had them balanced & car aligned. I say go with the new RH 3.6's.

+1 on a new set, no matter what you pick. It's not worth the headache to deal with used 3 piece wheels.

I liked my used RHs. Paid $1200+ shipping for them with good tires. Sold them 4-5 years later for $1600 with two rims with bent outers and one of those had a cracked inner barrel to a local guy. I tried to tell him to go elsewhere but he wanted them so bad he offered me more than the $1600 and paid to get them fixed. Apparently there was a shortage of RH wheels earlier this year.

Trevor

I actually like the look of the Kerscher (the 1 vote) - just curious why 18's instead of 17's - looks like you can get them in 7.5 and 9.0 width? How much lighter are we talking????

Todd, I don't like the look of techart daytonas. Sam, I'd order Kerscher in the same sizes that Speedlines came in which was 18x8 and 18x10 which are 10 and 11kg, respectively. Speedline 18x10 are 1kg heavier and RH 18x10 are about 2kg heavier per wheel.
