Default Is this a water pump issue? Pic inside...

Picture attached of water pump. Pink coolant residue around hoses. Temp is slightly higher than normal -- rises to over halfway at idle, lowers to mid range (above second white line, actual mid way position) during driving.

Do the experts think the water pump is toast, or is this a sign of bad hoses. Gut tells me water pump is kaput, coolant getting too hot, leaking out.

Bad gasket for sure. I think if the pump wasn't pumping the temp would go red.

Hmm... it's been years, but back in 1999 I had a water pump on my 944 start to go south, and the belt was effectively spinning the pump but the impeller was hardly moving. As I drove, and RPMs increased, actually got the impeller to move water, and the temp came down.

It was 50 degrees out today, that might have had something to do with the temp staying low...?

The residue is also on the lower radiator hose, the aft hose in the pic.

Thanks for the info... might start with a simple hose/gasket change on that close one in the picture. Simple enough.

Just a simple O'ring gasket in that spot.

It's leaking at that housing it would appear. The leaking coolant is replaced with air, and then the motor shows the tell-tale signs of an unvented system, just like you described. It might be as simple as a new o-ring. However, that plastic housing can warp and leak even with a new o-ring. Put the housing on a flat surface and check if you can slide a feeler gauge under it in the middle. If you can, it's best to get a new one. They're cheap. See post 11 in this thread:
