VarioCam -- Porsche’s answer to the power-boosting variable-valve-timing systems on newer models from BMW and several Japanese makes.
Car and Driver’s Pat Bedard thought VarioCam “at best inelegant -- it amounts to a plastic rubbing block, controlled by the engine computer, that adjusts the length of the drive chain between the intake and exhaust cams.”

Is this a weak point when going to 500+ hp?
Does this work well when turbo'ed?
Also, no good looking wide body panels for the 968 makes me leans torwards the 951...

I'm looking at new purchase of either a 951 or 968, and didn't like the sound of a "plastic rubbing block" on the 968.
the 3.0 can be included in any discussion of the most dependable engines ever produced by Porsche.
Is this a weak point when going to 500+ hp?

Whish I could take it out ,but it's not possible,I fab the bracket off 2 small alluminum flat bars & fasten the licence plate to them with double adhesive tape so that it will be flush with the front cover.I know front the license plates are ugly but we got no choice here, either it's on the car or the car stay of the road.

Maybe, Maybe not... If variocam is a horrible design by porsche as basically described by car and driver, which can't handle serious power, then the answer is no...
I would have thought somebody knowledgable would've been able to answer my question, instead of answering a question with relatively the same question...
I "crouched" to look at the front and back of a 968 and 951. I saw a lack of rim and tire width for significant hp. The stock 968 has 240 hp with a 225/60 rear tire... (8.85")
A new honda accord sixer has more
Why don't you take a gander at what the new 911 turbo s is running... 530 hp with 305 rear tires (12")... and that's with All Wheel Drive...
So like I originally stated, 968s don't have good looking wide body kits that I've found... If I'm running over 500 hp, yes I'll need a wide body kit to fit wide wheels and tires...

very good design, or they're designed well...
If there is a sports car as wide as an H1 Hummer with 550 hp, but it has 225 mm tires (as comes on the stock designed 698), then it doesn't do much for traction... as basic as it gets...
Again, if you missed my post above, a 911 Turbo s is running 530 hp with a 305 mm rear tire (12") and that's with All Wheel Drive... I would need something in this range with this much or more hp.
Why are you saying a 951 or 968 wouldn't be reliable if the guts are built up and the engine cooled correctly? Is a 911 Turbo S not reliable? I know my 1000 hp viper is reliable... And that's a problem if Dodge is more reliable than Porsche... actually funny...
To recap:
1)I'm assuming Variocam is a horrible design like Car and Driver stated, and wouldn't be able to handle 500+hp
2)There aren't any good looking Wide Body kits for 968 ... A.I.R. and the other one I found look horrible...

With your Rennlist name, I think you need to go with the 944 Turbo. Plus you have started off being kind of rude to the 968 guys. They are just trying to help you.
If you are planning on 550ish Hp then you need to check with the 3.0L 951 turbo guys. They have spent some big $$$ on their cars on their adventure to get that kind of power. Use their knowledge to make it much cheaper and easier on yourself. George will have a lot of info and advice for you but be prepared to spend more money than the car will ever be worth.
As far as the rear tires on a 951, I am running 285's on 10" rims and do not have any problem. There are a few guys who have managed to stuff even wider wheels under the stock fenders but it takes some extra work and adjustments or custom rims.
Good Luck with your project if you decide to start it.

My reply to you was is no way negative,all I was asking is how do you plan to get 500HP out of a 3.0 ltr 16 v 968 ,oh you probably could but at which cost ,usually the best way of getting HP out of the 16 v is not with a turbo but a Super Charger.Still you will come short of your 500 hp aim.So beleive me you will be better of to start with a 951 in a long run it will be lot cheaper. The second picture of the wide body 968 have fenders that don't look that great, all chopped up. The first pic looks really good. Who makes that? I would guess it's custom, because I haven't been able to find that anywhere. Merci pour la photo.
