Default dash light upgrade

So, does anyone have a good diy for replacing/upgrading the dash lights. Also, do you have to remove the steering wheel/airbag?

Thanks

I haven't replaced/upgraded the lights in our 968, but I've done it on our 951. BLUF: re-covering the factory reflectors is the best thing you can do. I purchased the Jager Engineering LED kit and it worked great... for about 2 months. Then the LEDs would die from the vibration. I went through two kits before I just gave up and went back to stock. I have removed the cluster with the wheel still in and also with it removed. It's a MUCH easier job with the wheel removed and you won't have to contort your hands to get to the connectors that way. Good luck and if you have any questions, PM me.

Hi Mike, Check out the link below on how to make the instrument lights brighter. Disconnect the battery negative wire and wait 20 - 30 min. for the Air Bag Compasitor (sp) to discharge if you are pulling the steering wheel.

did mine this morning - removing the airbag was easy with a torx t-30 bit ( disconnected the battery the night before ) and no problem sliding the instrument cluster out with the wheel off. Also removed the plastic cover that hides the rotating contact. I found it was only necessary to disconnect the left side of the cluster and turn it out to access the bulbs, these connectors are pretty stiff ( and delicate ). I find the lighting adequate without updating the reflectors, but you wouldn't call it bright. One funny thing, you can't power anything up to test your work ( or your parts ), if you do, you'll need to reset the airbag light...

Check Clark's Garage for a very complete write up on this and which bulbs to buy etc. I did the upgrade and it's very nice. Not a huge difference, but it's now the way it should have come from the factory.

944online.com also sells a kit to restore the reflectors, and also has LED's to replace the stock cluster lights. I haven't tried it personally but have run across it on their site numerous times.
