The belt tension setting is not that big of a deal on a 968.
I have seen a 9201 go for under $300 once or twice but one of those did not have the calibration bar. Personally I would not worry about it on a 968, you can get the BS belt good enough without one and the Tbelt tension is maintained by the spring/strut gadget anyway. If that thing seems bad replace it. If the belt feels properly tight after you pull the pin on the tensioner and spin the motor a couple times, sleep easy.
Some people replace those tensioners but I have never had a problem with one and had a few well over 100k and one at 185k miles on various cars all working fine. Over 150K I'd probably change it but I'd be concerned that the new one was of poor quality and check it once or twice while it gets settled in. I have had more problems with bad brand-new name-brand parts lately than I am comfortable with.

I replaced my timing belt hydralic tensioner at 120.000 miles and it still worked fine. I guess it was premainainance insurance. I think they are around $150. Is your timing belt loose or is the tensioner bleeding down? I have not really heard about checking the timing belt tension even though it has a pressured type tensioner. Have you ever tried to compress one of these units. If working properly it is almost impossible.

I've had two bad tensioners (both were leaking) on my 968 in a little over 60k miles, so I don't trust those things. Maybe its just bad luck, as I have only heard of a couple others that had the same problem, but I would have been happier if they had stayed with teh spring tensioner.
I always use my P9201 when I do belts. I plenty of pro mechanics say its not necessary, but I know one in particular, Don Istook, who won't do a belt job without one, and thats all the recommendation I need to keep using it. Of course, since I have a P9201, its easy for me to do so.

I am just gathering tools for the belt change. I plan on doing it in the summer.
Does anyone know what the life expectancy is of the rollers for the balance/timing belts? And the belts themselves?
