Talking 968 Air Boxe Mode

Will like to share this with new 968 owners that did join the 968 forum lately & haven't yet modify their air boxe. For those who will do modify their air boxe it's very important that the holes be has specified (size of them & location).

Great mod, adapted from the 964 guys. Way too bad that the inventor has removed himself from the 968 world.

looks like a good idea is there any hard data as to the before and after as to the measurable amount of the improvement ?

I am a skeptic of this mod. I think it makes more noise and causes the airbox to intake air from a low pressure area instead of a high pressure area. If it shows gains on the dyno, that does not reproduce street conditions with airflow over the car.

I'd love to really test this mod out but I am disinclined to cut up an airbox to do it. It's possible it works but my theory is that it just makes a bigger sucking sound from the driver's perspective by taking air from inside the skin of the car.

I guess was curious to see the benefit and why i raise the question........i have seen another airbox mod made to another car manufacturer and when tested it actually made less power and as Joel highlighted more noise

I remember reading up about it a few years back when I got my 968. There was a post about before and after dyno runs where this mod make something like +2hp. I did it, can't feel a difference in power but its definitely throatier sounding under hard acceleration.

This mod is probably the same deal as the 993 'motorsports' airbox...ie. all sound.

A magazine article accompanied the pdf we see here. In that article it was claimed
The Airbox mod and K&N air cleaner together gave us 10.8 peak horsepower and 7.3 lb/ft of peak torque...
They did a bunch of dyno testing. Not taking a position, just passing this on.

Great, I will contact you. I have a K&N on the shelf so i should be able to replicate the mod. I could see a few HP being on the table if the intake was muffled for noise regulations or concerns but the intake does not appear to have been muffled to me. I have seen that sort of thing before on less sporty cars.

To my eye the factory intake has been poked down into the airspace right on the front of the car where air is rammed into the radiator, the best place to find cool air and good pressure. The added noise from the mod suggests to me that the airspace you have connected the engine to is now better connected to the cabin, which IMO is bad news. And more holes on the dirty side of the airbox are only helpful if the factory neglected to make the intake big enough from the get-go. That would have been kinda dumb.

Anyway it'd be interesting to try it.

There is no way this mod can make 10hp and 7lb/ft of torque. i testd it on a dyno and saw a 2-3rwhp gain. But like other mentioned, would that still be the case in real world?

several people have tried variations of this modification. It was the first modification i did to my 968 and well worth it imho. Car sounds better and you get a few extra ponies. This is an old modification that has been used so many times over by onwners of several different vehicles. A lot of VW guys modify their airbox (Corrados, Passats, etc), as do 964 owners.

In regards to heat, if you are worried about heat....you can always install the early 968 front engine cover.

There are a couple guys over in europe who created an even bigger opening in the bumper for more air, and others who created ducting from the intake box to the bumper opening.

That's definitely something to think about... My cars a '92 and has the cover, so it never even crossed my mind.

This is mine a 93 after (air boxe mode) & cover reinstall. Why Porsche choose to discontinue the cover after 93 I don't really know, but if you ask me (question of taste) the engine bay look lot better with the cover on versus none covered one.

I also think the front cover looks very good. It just completes the entire compartment.
