Talking On the photo trail

Guys I need a photo of a 968 for my 964 book. However what I need is very specific. I need a side on shot showing front and rear wheels. The 968 must be an factory option M030 with the special 965 part number Design 92 wheels. It is actually the wheels I want in the photo but seeing I have included the RS turbo in my book why not the whole car. Looks much better anyway having the whole car. Time is of the essence so please feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions. Photo must be high res and nice and clear. No restrictions on colour or any other mods. Correct wheels is super important.
Ciao,
Adrian

Is a Design 92 wheel what is referred to as a Cup 1 wheel? If it is a flat dish type like on the 964's and 928's I'm sure I've never seen a photo, or car in person, with those wheels. Try posting on 968.net, maybe you'll have more luck there.

Dear Damian,
No they are design 90 wheels. The photo you have under your name shows the basic design of the design 92 wheels. I need the ones fitted to an option M030 968.

Adrian, then we're talking about my wheels. As far as I know, mo30 cars would usually get the 7.5 and 9 x 17" wheels-which we usually call 'Cup 2' or 993 type. You could get them as a separate option as well, as my car has. I'm sure someone on 968.net would have a nice image for you.

Dear Damian,
If you have the 7.5s up front thems the ones. They are Design 92 wheels not Design 93 wheels but hey who cares. Can I have a photo of your 968 and its wheels. I much prefer a rennlister contribution.

Adrian,

I have recently bought an M030 968, 1993 model year, with the 17" factory option wheels that came with the M030 package. If you're interested, I can take some high quality pictures at the weekend. Here's a (poor) photo for reference.

cheers

Derek

Derek,
You don't have the wheels adrian is looking for. There were two styles of 17" wheels for 968's, one for '92-'93 and one for '94-'95. I wish I could help out, as my dads' '94 coupe has the correct 17's (w/o M030), but I don't have decent pic and no digicam.

This is the only pic I have, and you can barely see the wheels

Now I'm confused! Adrian mentioned the "965 part number" wheels. According to the PET parts database, the only wheels fitted to the 968 with part numbers starting with "965" were the M403/M030 option wheels (17" in 7.5" and 9" widths) available on model years up to and including '93. The PET lists option M398 wheels (also 17" in 7.5" and 9" widths) for model year 94 and up, and with part numbers starting with "993". The PET does not list M030 or M403 options beyond '93 model year in connection with wheels.

The build sticker for my '93 model year shows both option codes 030 and 403. I think that the M030 option was not available on the '92 model year, so, in practice, the only models that would have had factory fitted wheels with part numbers starting with "965" would have been '92 cars with option M403, or '93 cars with either option code M030 or M403. I think option M403 was available separately on cars without M030, but all '93 MY M030 equipped cars came with M403. It would also appear that for '94 and up cars, the option code for the wider 17" wheel option was changed from M403 to M398. Hence, a '94 and up M030 equipped car would have wheels with part numbers starting with "993".

So does that clear things up???

I think we need help, Adrian!

cheers

Derek

How about these wheels, from a 968 CS?

Or maybe this version?

Dear Derek,
The PET CD is not the only source of data and it is not always accurate and there is also the ROW M030 options and the USA M030 options. We will not even enter the track of combination options and changing option numbers for certain markets. I also have to admit that my knowledge of application of options and variations on the 968 is not my strong point. The photo with the blue CS and the other two 968s below it make my points for me. The CS has painted (also an option) Design 92 wheels. The other two 968s have distinctly looking 993 design wheels. There are subtle differences. I am lucky I guess in that writing a book and having sets of all these wheels myself for my 964 C4 (my wife keeps telling me to get rid of them) that I have learned to recognise the differences. The design 92 wheels for the different models were also very slightly different as well. I wrote ten pages just on wheels and tyres on the 964. Seems to me that the 968 would need the same treatment.
I have also checked out the photograph you posted as well. They are the design 92 wheels that I am looking for. They are 965 wheels I am sure. They look exactly like the 965 wheels on my C4. I am also sure that they are 7.5JX17 65 mm offset as well. The photograph of this 968 in your hands would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Kgain,
Your wheels are clearly 17 inch, 993s. If you look at the shape of wheel nut holes this is a giveaway. Again the 17 inch 993 differs just slightly from the 16 inch 993 wheel.

On the subject of wheels I have a photo of the only Swiss approved 968 Turbo S fitted with 18 inch turbo factory speedlines.

Adrian,

I will take some pictures this weekend. I just hope that the weather here improves to brighten up the pictures!

Everyone:

To summarise what wheels were available on the 968. As far as I can tell, the standard factory fitment all through the model years seems to be the 16" wheels that you can see in the photos of the black and amethyst color cars in Sweanders' posting above. The PET shows that these have part numbers starting with "944...". These are similar to, but not the same as, the standard 16" wheels that were fitted to the early 993's, and this can cause some confusion. For the '92 and '93 model years, the 17" wheels shown in the maritime blue Club Sport car in Sweanders post, and also on my own blue car (see my html link in my earlier post) were available as options on coupes (and cabs?), option codes M030 or M403, and standard on Club Sports. I think it was only the CS cars where you could get these wheels color coded to the car color. These wheels have part numbers starting with "965...". Then, for '94 and '95 MY, the optional 17" wheels (option M398) are the same as those on Damian's and Kgain's cars. These wheels have part numbers starting with "993...". I also have a feeling that these last wheels may have been standard fitment in some markets on the later cars.

I don't know about the Turbo S/RS models, but I think they had 18" Speedlines?

cheers

Derek

That all looks correct to me Derek.

When I said "correct" earlier, I was saying I had the wheels adrian was asking about . . .not implying your car didn't have the right wheels for its year.
