A post on another thread got my attention and was just wondering if the cam chain timing is something that needs to be set periodically or just when wrenched on?

 

You can't adjust the chain timing, but you can adjust the exhaust cam timing in relation to the crank.
The chain is preset at 7 links? (if I remember correctly) between the two cams.

How often should it be checked or adjusted? I have around 120,000 miles and did not see anything in the maintenance records about it. I plan to do the belts, waterpump and variocam pads this winter.

 

If you don't know when the timing belt and such was replaced, the general rule is do ASAP then every 5 years or 30-50,000 miles.
Does that sound right to the rest of you guys?

 

You might as well do the chain when you do the cam pads. Also, check the teeth on both sprockets, they are known to break.

 

+1 120,000k miles is a little long without checking the tensioner/pads &chaine if the pads let go you can kisse your head goodby so do it ASP,__FRporscheman (Arash) has a very good DIY write up for doing the job not only does it show how to do it but give you all the parts needed to it properly.(Broken teeth on camshaft sprocket)
