First of all, I assume you have already checked the fuse.
Usually these VDO clocks need a resistor and/or capacitor to be replaced. I believe the capacitors are 100 microFarads, and the resistor is 150 ohms. All inexpensive stuff.
Here's two write-ups I found. They are for a mercedes, but the clocks have the same innards.

If you're any good with a soldering iron, it's not that hard to do. Also, you won't need to pull out the console, the clock/cubby pulls right out, and you can pop the clock away from the cubby. If you don't feel up to it I can do it for you.

The fuse box is under the hood, up near the windshield on the driver's side. It's opposite the battery. There should be a diagram inside the lid. The clock is fuse number 9, in the row of fuses along the front of the box; 15 amp, so it's blue. Its the same fuse as the cigarette lighter. Another clue that it's blown is that the outside temp display will not allow you to switch to farenheit, but you might not notice that being in Canada

Thank you very much. I tried switching to fareinheit and it did not work so it must be the fuse. Where can I order a fuse for this? Thanks again!!

Standard size blade fuses (as opposed to mini). There may be a spare in the fusebox (inside the cover with a fuse puller). If you don't have one in there, any auto parts store (Canadian Tire) or even walmart will have them.

Glad to hear it, easy fixes are the best!
I guess I put way too much research into my first post, haha. But congrats on buying the car! Don't hesitate to stop by for any more help you need!
