Around here, I see thousands of new Porsches driven by people who think they are just some luxury car, equivalent to a Lexus. However, I was surprised and disappointed when I drove past a Guards Red 3.2 Carrera in the opposite lane as I went through an intersection, and the driver failed to even acknowledge my wave, much less return it...

I think we should confiscate his Porsche!

I don't even bother with new Porsches; I get the highest percentage of wave backs from 993, 964, and 944 owners. Many of the newer car owners don't know what they're seeing, and traditional (pre 964) guys don't consider us to be Porsche owners.

Well yeah, that's what I meant.

They really need to get over that already...

Besides, not going out of their way to wave to us is one thing, but not RETURNING one? That's just plain unfriendly. I mean I don't go out of my way to wave to Cayenne drivers, but if one waves to me I sure as hell return it...more than that, I'd be pleased to see that somebody in a "non-purist" Porsche still feels like part of "the family".

Thanks for the comment folks. I have driven both Porsches. Yes I love the looks of my 968 Cab in Cobalt Blue.... But - drive a 300 BHP 996 and it takes you to a very different level of enjoyment. The smothness and responce of that flat Six is just like the 911's I remember. Steering is crisp and fast. My 968 is in great shape well cared for yet it is not camparable in driving experience. Yes I know about the IMS... Chris in Bellevue can Fix that for $1500 - about the cost I have seen posted for Pinion problems. Every 911 I had has had Some issue. but buying an older one gets you tried and true fixes - like the old Air Cooled 2.7 & 3.0.
I do like many features of the 968 - but I will admit - this rainy spring and the complexity of safely using the top & boot have me in a funk. And a 996 with the same miles on the clock as my 968 coupe @ less than $25,000 is attractive. I am not up to puting 3 or 4k into the 968 to make it faster??? so anyway thanks for the comments.

he'll tell you stories of watching the oil pressure guages fade and fade down to nothing at lime rock.
I'm in the Boston area right now, actually. I'm at my apartment in Dover. If I have time tomorrow, I'd love to get together. No promises as I have a full schedule, but if you want to shoot me a pm, go for it!

The 968 r&p was very real. I personally know of a number of folks that lived through that experience. I can't name one 996owner that I personally know that has experienced the IMS failure. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that the internet horror stories about the IMS failure get played up a bit more than I believe are warranted (um, probably a very poor choice of words there, eh? lol). For those that have lived through it, you truly have my sympathies. I have read enough on the 996 boards to understand that it happens too often, but I don't believe every 996 engine is destined to destroy itself. How many 996s are there running around out there?

Is it time for me to retell my Boxster story? lol

I think I have found the 996 for me 1999 C4 - and the wife says SHE wants to keep the 968 & use it as her daily driver dumping "Her Car" a 1996 Avalon. So we may become a two Porsche family. :-)

Well Greg (and others),
I am about to find out for myself. I just purchased a 2000 Carrera 4. Arctic Silver with full Leather, and... TechArt Coil-over suspension...and TechArt Headers & Mufflers! And yes the wife is still OK with keeping the 968 Cab. It may turn out to be the smother quieter of the two - but I think I am going to enjoy this 911.
