It can, so obviously you would not want to use it with van full of kids. As I said the risk is very low so it does have its use in work trucks and stuff like that. I have heard a lot of people who use it. It is not for a 968 but I just wanted to let people know that it is something that works. Something of very little value I would try it.

Freeze 12...its compatible with R-12...does not require that the lubricant or other components be changed...and colder than 134a

recharge kit "cantap" is a little bit different than the old R12 kits.

I just bought two cans of R12 for $5/ea on Craigslist. I'd say that's your best bet.

Actually it cools better than R12. George Goble was a big proponent of using it as a drop-in replacement for R12 until he started marketing his own drop-in replacement (R406a.) [He now also has an R134 replacement, GHG-X8, that is supposed to run 10 degrees cooler, might be good in a conversion.]

No, propane does not explode but it will burn just like gasoline or for that matter the mineral oil in an R12 system. Yes there is a bit more pressurized flammable stuff under the hood so it's not as safe as the alternatives but it would not cause a hollywood-style fireball o' death if you crash.

I played around with it in an old station wagon years ago, worked great. I still use it for leak testing from time to time. It causes no harm to the seals or oil in the system so it's great for this. Cheap too.

I wasn't exactly thinking of a Hollywood fireball-of-death More like visions of the condenser springing a leak and a jet of hot propane suddenly hitting air and bursting into flame...kind of like a hydrogen "explosion", rather than exploding in the sense of an explosive compound decomposing. Maybe not so likely, but that was my first thought...

Has propane actually experimentally demonstrated higher cooling capacity than R-12, or is that just personal experience? And if it HAS...then why wasn't it used instead of R-12 in the first place, was it just the risk of fire?
