The 968 TS has a specific final drive (3.4) the 968 TRS has the same final drive as the 968 NA (3.875).

I have a best top speed of 154 indicated/147 GPS with the top down on my 968 tip. And there are plenty of folks that can vouch for me. I have *much* faster times recorded in my 951 before I had a custom Kevin Gross built tranny done for it, and now it doesn't have the top end but it gets there quicker! Closed course, professional driver, brush and floss and look both ways before crossing the street, yadayadayada disclaimer.

The 968, even with the top down, does a great job holding the road.

Funny story, my wife and I were participating (with the 968) at a charity driving event for disadvantaged kids at the Kansas Speedway, and one of the perks was some laps on the track behind a pace car. If you've done anything like this, you know what typically happens is that a bunch of drivers will sandbag and let the pace car get pretty far ahead, and then you drop the hammer to catch up. The pace car, in this case, decided he was going to catch some of us napping and try to lap us. Once we saw him take off, needless to say, it was on, and so a bunch of us went for it, including a Ferarri F-40 (and man oh man, that was something else to hear when he went screaming by us). Anyway, we were going about 130mph with the top down and I see the passenger in the car to my left laughing and pointing a camera at us. I turned to say something to my wife, and realized what they were laughing at: my wife had fallen asleep! Needless to say, thats a proud moment for me, as I realized that I truly married the right woman.

I dated a gal who had a best friend who was a neighbor of Terry Labonte. She scored us tickets and vip access to the Pocono 500. We took two cars (me in my Alfa GTV) and while we were driving both girls took their bras off and we closed to each other and the bras were exchanged through the windows at speed. She was almost a keeper.

I stand corrected, the 3.875 value was off the top of my head, IIRC it's the final drive on the 944 S2 gearbox.

Q: why were the .660 gears the choice that they ended up going with ?

A: installing a .660 gear in the stock box, works out to about the equivalent of the .711 in the turbo box given the difference at the back.

I am in the middle of rebuilding my 968 transaxle - new diff & pinion bearings - and I found a 0.68 6th gear cog that fits. I purchased one to install before everything gets buttoned up. With stock 16" rims and OE tire sizes it works out to approx. 2800 rpm at 75 mph.

I'm not a fan of slowing down my car with taller gears. If i were to change ratios, i'd swap my FD for a 3.910 or 4.100

I was just looking for a cost-effective way of dropping a few RPMs on the hwy in top gear. Not really looking for a higher top speed at all. I do make some long trips in my car & I thought the addition of a taller top gear would benefit the motor in the long run. I am more then willing to share the Co. name here but not sure if I am allowed to post it here?

UPDATE;

recognizing that gear ratio immediately, stew has confirmed my suspicions, with the source transmission being the Audi S4-01e box.

the longer .680 or .600 gears become available of course, because of the racing context, w/ the stock gears being removed for shorter ratio gears, and made available for sale... or new gearsets being available as well.

we just never knew if the Audi 01e DIESEL (gears MUST BE FROM A DIESEL 2WD Euro car)

gearsets would fit the G-46 box. now it's confirmed.

the source therefore would be any transmission shop, swapping out the gears.

this is great news.

968 gearbox = Audi gearbox. Not exact same but part of same family which means many parts are interchangeable.

Just an FYI - the addition of the taller 6th gear - specifically the 0.68 I am adding - requires some clearancing to be done before it can be properly installed. The folks who sold me the gear have done the same swap on a 968 before, so I was convinced this will work. There are even taller gears available, that will require more clearancing, however they had not tried any of these before so I stuck with what had already been done with good results. Villhuer's statement about Audi internals reflects the same as what I was told.
