Has any one actually fixed an aftermarket lower final drive to his
manual 968 in order to improve acceleration,like 4to 1 OR around 4.111TO 1?
I am curious as to any feedback or the source of these ratios.
The Turbo RS competed in Lmans and ADAC races and i believe that they had alternative 4th to 6th gear ratios as well as taller FD,with 80-90%lsds.

started pondering this question also.. would like to get something like 4.25 end ratio, or better would be of course to have shorter gearing on 3rd to 6th, wouldn't like to get first gears shorter anymore (1st. and 2nd are short enough, anyways).
Is there any cheaper alternative than almost $4k short geared top gears...
might better consider putting in SC than spending that amount on merely gears.
I basically use only 3rd and 4th gear on Finnish tracks, which makes it useless to have stock 5th and 6th gear.

Shorter? I've always wanted taller. The first few gears are short enough, and then cruising at 75 in 6th, the engine speed is way too high. Our 928 S4 is revving at 2000 rpm at about 70 - 75mph.
odurandina, please tell me more about the taller 5th and 6th gears available from Audi. I'd like to get these gears. PM me if you think that's more appropriate.

dunno for sure which gears are interchangable between 01E's, but at least you get some numbers to start checking.
Getting shorter ratios - just how many times you have driven more than 120mph with your car...?
having a top speed of 155mph or whatever is totally useless with our tracks and speed limits.
SQS Racing @ Czhecs' can make any gears u like, 3-6th are cheaper than lower gears. cost smth like 2000eur + tranny shipping there and back.

Thanks Matti. I mainly want the taller 6th so the engine speed is lower when cruising at 70-75mph. I do a lot of 200-mile road trips back and forth from school, and I don't like revving at 3200 the whole time. I feel like it should be at 2700-2800. If my actual top speed decreases, that's OK. I've only gone over 120mph twice the whole 5 years I've owned a 968... and both times I was still in 5th anyway.

I'd target top speed to be around 140mph, so take little off 3rd-6th gears. But, it seems to be quite pricey stuff to make happen, so maybe not worth doing before tranny fails completely. O1E's seem to be rather strong boxes, if used right.

I purchased a used Audi 6th gear with a taller ratio from a place in AZ. & paid a VG price. My goal was like Arash's, to lower rpm @ hwy speeds. I'm not too worried about top speed and how it may be affected to be honest. All in the interest of bettering engine longevity. I do a lot of hwy miles w/ my car and even a 500 rpm drop will make a difference IMO.

anyone knows what these are
The 968 2WD has these ratios:
5th: 0.912 31/34 Standard ratio
1.04 24/25 Special order ratio
6th: 0.778 28/36 Standard ratio
0.89 28/25 Special order ratio
-> special order ratios?

Where can I find out what audi 01E gears will work as my 6th gear, i.e. what ratio options I have? Also, where can I buy them at a good price, Sunset?
Something's not right. I'm looking at the 968 stock gearing graph from californiamotorsports, and according to the graph, at 3000 rpm in 6th gear, the speed it 80 mph. No way! If that were true, I'd already be satisfied! In reality, (off the top of my head) it's more like 3000 rpm at 65 mph. And I am using stock wheel/tire sizes.

Sure! I must have a magical 6th gear. I'll ship it to you via Santa Claus in a few months! ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I am running 17" wheels, 7 and 8.5" wide, with 255/40/17 rear tires. This is the stock size tire for 968s with 17" wheels, right? I haven't driven the 968 in a few weeks but I remember the rpm being higher at 80mph, like 3300. I will take it for a drive when I get back home this weekend, and pay closer attention to the gauges.

there's nice calculator to do maths, there's stock gearing vs. calculated with 4.375 final gear (2004 A6 allroad quattro would have this)
