Default Porsche Fahrer October 2009 Turbo Special

Picked up this German magazine when flying through Munich a couple of weeks ago, very nice content. Articles on all the current Turbos - including Panamera and Cayenne, nice articles on 911 turbos new and old, including the GT1, and also some nice Transaxle articles; a 944 Turbo buyers guide, 924GTP Le Mans article, an article on a 1 owner 924 Carrera GT with 460K Km on the clock (1 engine overhaul in that period - and it still looked brand new..), and an 8 page article on the 968 Turbo S.
In the 968 Turbo S article, the kind of conclusion I see is that it was probably the better car compared with the 964 3.8RS (higher top speed -280 KPH, more balanced, tremendous mid range par - 500NM at 3K RPM), but for political reasons (Porsche lived off the 911) the 3.8RS was pushed as the GT racing series car at the time, with 968 pricing and marketing leaving it at a ridiculous number of only 17 cars produced (plus 3 turbo RS). Porsche did not want to have serious internal competition to the flagship 911.
Much as that was probably the right decision by Porsche at the time, the lingering question is what if the times had been different? Would we have had plenty of 305BHP, 280KPH 968 Turbo S's to chose from second hand today?

Yes, it's in German, a few quotes from the 968 article (and apologies, German does not always translate well into English):

"Successful "beings" do not always make a great career, the Porsche 968 Turbo S, the hottest of all transaxle sports cars was just too good for this world. As it became evident that the blown 968 might be a better car than the 911, it was held back - and the end put to the turbo in the front engine cars. Too bad, this 4 cylinder car had what it takes to win."

"This 4 cylinder Porsche is better on the track than most of the 911's of its generation, at the same time it offers more space and is quite comfortable. It is also extremely exclusive, with only 17 cars built"

"305 HP at 5400RPM was the power of the new engine for the Turbo S, the maximum par of 500NM was reached already at 3000 RPM. 500NM, that was the value of the 5.4 litre engine of the 928 GTS! And with these values, the turbo 968 also had more power then the allmighty 964 3.8 RS, with its 300 BHP and 360NM of par. Even in terms of top speed, the 280 km/h left the 911 behind at 270 km/h, and in terms of the 0 - 100 km/h sprint, the 968 Turbo S only needed 5 seconds"
