Mobil 1 vs Castrol

I have been running 10W40 because that is what is recommended for older Porsches.
Miles, 5W40 is what is recommended on Audi turbo's. Either one should work. I would give Total a call and see what they say. What weight Redline were you planning on using?

I use Wal-Mart synthetic, and I'd challenge anyone to come up with scientifically sound reason as why it isn't every bit as good as other name-brand oils that would make a difference in a car manufactured 15+ years ago.

Raj, you don't use Castrol??? I'm telling on you!!! LOL
I like valvoline and have been "loyal" for years, but with the '95 when I rebuilt the engine I decided to try castrol syntec, no particular reason. I think I found some articles online that made me like castrol. I still like valvoline and use that in my '84 and '93. Just use what you like, oil is like religion, enjoy yours and don't argue with me about mine .

I just saw a commercial " Think with your dipstick Jimmy" very funny. I think I am going to stick with the Mobil 1 "brought back by popular demand" 15w50. No science involved in my decision more of a loyalty/tradition thing?

If the oil has the SM rating on the back it doesn't have the required amount of high pressure additives in it. Part of the SM rating is that those additives were taken out to make the cat's last two years longer. Since new cars now are sold with a federal cat warranty of 10 years/100,000 miles as opposed to the previous warranty of 8 years/80,000 miles. It is not needed in new cars since the valvetrain's are using roller lifters rather than flat ones. If the oil says its reccomended for SM rated cars but doesn't actually have the service rating seal on it that says SM your fine. But if it has a SM rating on the service rating seal it wont have the proper levels of additives.

This info pulled from the Mobil 1 site made me think it has what I need?
Mobil 1 15W-50 exceeds warranty requirements for gasoline engines where an API certified oil is specified. It meets:
API SM/SL
Requirements for Diesel Powered Vehicles where an API CF or API CD is recommended
Provides extra anti-wear additive for older vehicles
Mobil 1 15W-50 is formulated with SuperSyn, an extra-high viscosity synthetic fluid, plus extra anti-wear additive to provide extra protection for severe service applications such as towing, hauling and racing. Mobil 1 15W-50 is recommended for high performance vehicles including turbocharged and supercharged engines where a thicker oil film is desired.
Mobil 1 15W-50 is also recommended for older valve train designs that may benefit from a higher level of anti-wear normally not required for newer generation vehicles. Mobil 1 15W-50 will also provide better anti-wear protection for higher valve spring tensions in certain racing engines.
For more information, see the Mobil 1 15W-50 Product Data Sheet and Material Safety Data Sheet

I use Amsoil and feel it holds up much better than M-1. After a race or two the M-1 is already looking dark whereas the Amsoil is good for 4 races or more before it even starts to look dark.

Some of the oils cited in this thread are NOT good for our cars.

One of the factors that determine colour is the amount of moly in it (moly increases the darkness). Mobil 1 has some moly in it and amsoil does not, which would be consistent with your observations.
I use redline, which has a ton of moly in it. A few hundred miles after an oil change, my oil is really dark on the dipstick.
