Default Oil level warning light on but oil is not low...

My 968 had the oil level warning light illuminated when I first bought it so obviously the oil level was the first thing I checked but it was right at the top mark on the dipstick. PPI didn't make note of the warning light so I called the shop and asked if it was on before the 968 was transported to me and they still claim it wasn't [which I feel is BS but let's not get into that]...

Next I did a little searching and thought it could be a faulty oil level sender unit. So last week when I was changing my oil and filter, I inspected the oil level sender connection and it looks good. I ordered new bolts, gasket, and proceeded to replace the oil level sender with another used one from Arash's 89 944 parts car but the oil light is still on even after the new sender and oil change.

Has anyone seen this before or could offer help diagnosing what's wrong? The oil level light isn't really a big deal except that the idiot light is on as a result which is annoying. Thanks.

There could be a grounding issue with the harness. I have seen this before. Trace your wires that connect to the oil level sender and make sure everything looks good.

Thanks Raj, do you remember where the oil level sender grounding point was? Is it accessible from the engine bay or do I need to jack up my 968 again?

There is a 12 pin connector behind the glove box that the wire from the sender plugs into. If there aren't any breaks in the wire check there next.

Trevor, if you want, on Sunday we can go through it all and try to figure it out.

If you unplug the sender the light should turn off unless it's grounded somewhere, right?
