Need advice on cam purchase
I had my mechanic pull the valve cover to take a look inside and he said there are 2 BAD lifters. He's not sure about the cam yet but said I may need one. (two, I suppose)
I've done preliminary investigation on places that sell cams; RS Barn, Webcam, Pelican, Sunset. Prices seem to vary widely (if I read correctly) from about $600-1,600? I think they are all for the set of 2. Can anyone confirm this? Also, there are new, reground, and performance cams.
If I am shelling out such large sums anyway, I think I would prefer a performance cam. I'd like to feel SOMETHING for my money, after all. Are there any negatives to this? What are gains in power on an otherwise stock car?
Do I need to replace all lifters or am I OK with only replacing the 2 bad ones?
I assume I need to change the chain and tensioner pad. Is there anything else?
I am talking to the mechanic again tomorrow afternoon so I'd really appreciate feedback so I can decide what approach to take.
Thanks!
Todd

Todd, you can get new cams for $600 each. Most builders would tell you to swap cams and lifters together since they wear together. I might have a source that is even cheaper.
I would definitely do new pads and chain. Let me know if you want to get new units.

To following up, my car is back together. We were surprised at the condition of the cam/sproket, tensioner , and pads. They were in excellent condition with virtually no wear. At 70k? I had to see it with my own eyes.
As it turned out, I checked with the dealer where I knew the car was serviced before I bought it and had him check the service records. Apparently, the cam/tensioner was replaced at 35k miles about 12 years ago. So, the current parts have 35k miles on them with what looks like plenty of service left.
So, I ordered a complete set of lifters, did the timing and balance shaft belts, new rollers, engine mounts, seals and more. All that's left is ; we are waiting for a heat sheild part to come in. Can't wait.

Glad to hear it! Performance cams come with sacrifices anyway - I think Porsche is capable of getting the most power out of an engine without making the undesirable sacrifices.
