Default Roll Cage

Well my car is off for a week to have a full roll cage to be fitted. Will post pics when I get it back next week.

Thanks TC,

How does the price and quality compare with the Full SD welded cage. I looked at Lali's car that EMC done and was very impressed. Got half cage at the mo ( caged one ) and want to upgrade to a full welded with door bars.

Hi Kev

I know the guys at EMC. Their work is good quality (if a bit functional) however the Custom Cage in terms of welding and fitment is better, this comes at a price though, my cage was £1,700 whereas I think an SD cage fitted is about £1,200 from EMC.

As you are in Essex, you are welcome to pop round and have a look (although the car is in bits again at the moment).

IMO there are a number of issues with that rollcage. First there is no diagonal bar in the same plane as the roll bar and no proper mounting bar for the shoulder harnesses. That would not pass for a racing cage for any of the clubs that I am familiar with and I would be afraid to wear the shoulder belts if I was instructing in that car. Sorry, not trying to be negative just stating what I see.

From the NASA rule book.

15.6.7 Diagonal Brace
One (1) diagonal brace shall be used in the same plane as the main hoop. The diagonal
should be one continuous path; meaning that it must conform to Diagrams 15.6.7a or
15.6.7b. Note- If the installation method from Diagram 15.6.7b is used, the builder
should pay close attention to alignment. One end of the diagonal brace shall attach to
the corner, or horizontal part, of the main hoop above the driver’s head, within twelve
(12) inches of the driver’s-side corner. The other end of the diagonal brace shall attach
to the mounting plate (or to the main hoop as close to the mounting plate as practically
possible) diagonally opposed to the driver’s head (passenger floor).

WRT harness mounting

6. The shoulder harness shall be mounted behind the driver and above a line drawn
downward from the shoulder point at an angle of no more than twenty (20)
degrees with the horizontal.

Not sure I get your first point about the same plane. On my cage the diagonal is in the same plane as the cross over at the roof. i.e. figure 15.6.7b

See below, the diagonal has to be in the same plane as the main roll hoop as circled in white. If there is one in that plane I cannot see it in the photos you have uploaded.

I think it is just the picture, its not clear in the one you posted, but the cross over is defo in the same plane.. The harness mount point will be moved, I agree a bar would have been nice, but its just the way the cage came.

James,

Is the cross-over you mention what I have colored as yellow in the pic below? A true cross-over will come from the top of the hoop (within 12" of the corner) and extend to the attachment point on the opposite corner (and in the same plane as the main hoop).

The cross tubes, green line in your pic is at an angle (~15 deg) and joins the roll over bars running over the roof, (and over each door), in the same plane, i.e. 15.6.7b. The yellow line is at 0 deg and is side impact and joins the white "circle" you marked above. And these are all joined together.

So in simple terms the X frame is at an angle and supports the roll bar. The Yellow bar is side impact protection, joined to the X frame (by other tubes not visable), and these all join at the roof, at the roll bar. This then extends to the front of the car with more roll over protection, side impact protection and a bar running from each side of the car, all welded together.

That's what I thought and that design would not comply with most US racing bodies. The green line that I drew must be in the same plane as the main hope (ie, the plane the yellow side impact bars are in).

I've never seen one designed like yours, that's why I asked. If you look at TC17's cage you will see that he not only has the angled X to the rear shock area but also has an X in the main roll hoop.
