Default 10w30 Mobil 1 bad?

Over the weekend I decided to help my dad out and change the oil in his 968 for him. Had not been changed in a long time and he rarely drives the car. AFAIK, he always just used 10w30 Mobil 1 and would take a case to his local mechanic to change it for him. So that is wht I bought and used this weekend. I wonder now though whether I should change it again to something else. Reading a lot on the boards about additives and what not. I used just the regular 10w30, not the extended life or clean drive version.
Is the 15w50 the one to use? Dumb me for not doing research.

I don't pay much attention to the latest oil news because I only use 20w50 Redline in my track only 944 Turbo. Have for 8 years and that's the only Porsche oil I ever buy.

This sounds like my father's S2.

It should be just fine with the 10W-30. On a harder driven track car or hotter running turbo, then you'd be better off with a 5W-50 or 20W-50.

Thanks guys.

Would it be worthwile to add some ZDDP anyway?

6spd, 140k miles, never going on track, rarely tops 3k rpm =)

Heck no. Do a search for Tom Hillary's oil research thread in the 928 Forum. Mobil 1 oil has all the ZDDP a street driven car could ever need.

I don' t have a chemical engineering degree, so take this with a grain of salt, but I don't think Mobil 1 10/30 could be considered 'bad'. I've seen some people say that it isn't fully synthetic and others make strong suggestions that you want to go with 5/xx or 0/xx or something to get as much lubrication from a cold start as possible, but otherwise I think it is well respected.

Any SM rated oil has extremely low levels of ZDDP. The feds think it makes the cats last alittle longer. It isnt a problem if you have a roller valvetrain, but for flat lifter cars the oil will squeeze out of the space between the lobe and the lifter face. Doesn't matter what brand it is because it comes with the SM oil rating.
