Keep my 968 cab or get a Boxster?
Hey all. I have the opportunity to purchase a 98 Boxster with 55K miles for $15,000. To finance this however I'll need to sell my 968 cab (150k) for around $11,000. Yes, no, maybe? I always wanted a Boxster. Of course I always wanted a 968 too! Decisions.................
Thoughts?
Thanks.

Go drive a boxter. And see witch you like better. That may answer your question.
You do already have what you want though. So save your money for 968 maintenance.

It's pretty pathetic when one can buy a Boxster for the same price as a very, very nice 968 or 928 that's considerable older. Like mentioned, Boxsters are very, very common but, admittedly, nice in their own way. I'm waiting until the new "hardtop Boxster" prices start plummeting. It'll be a few years but I'm well-wheeled in the meantime.
Doing your own work on the 968 is much easier than the B-car. Also, the early Boxsters had some pretty pricey issues. Sometimes the only fix was to get a new engine. Go to the Boxster forum and they can tell you what to look out for.

I've heard boxsters are fun to drive... but the standard model is crap with 2.5L engine 201hp, 181tq. I have seen these early standard boxsters ranging from $8k to $15k so you're not really looking at a great deal. Find a boxster S for that price in good condition and that would be worth going for.
You can get a cheap boxster S if it has a salvage title:

Or high mileage:

Or just keep your eyes open for a lucky deal. GL!

Thanks all. I just figured the Boxster would be nice because it's different and newer. Lower mileage isn't too much of a factor, but it doesn't hurt. I love the 968 but it's still very close to it's roots- the 944. I'll be finishing my 951 in a few weeks (months). I figured that the Boxster- 968 swap would be best. Topless to topless.
As a side note one of the nice things about the 968 is that no one knows what the heck it is!
Thanks again.

Only 2,003 968 cabs sold in the US and Canada in all 4 years. A rare treat indeed.

I have had a Boxster (a '99) and I loved it. However you see them everywhere. Be careful of the dreaded RMS (Rear Main Seal) issue and the sleeved motor. Most have been repaired, but you never know. BTW, $15K seems high. I think if you look you can find MY2000 in that price range or pay a few thousand more and get an S.

I managed to find an 01 S that suited me, is a fairly uncommon color, and so far still have the 968 cab. I just got it Friday though and I will have to sell something as I've run out of parking and wife is out of patience.

I was at another Club Social meeting last night. About 50 cars - all types of Porsche. But folks still come to see the "Unique" Porsche Cabriolet - the 968. There were two there and they still draw folks with timeless style unlike anything on the road. Note the other 968 was a very early 1992 #80. Nice car Dark Green metallic with Gray interior.
