The hatch latch (the "receptacle" that attaches to the body) in my 95 coupe shows part # 944.538.056.04. I am attempting to replace it, and have a latch with part # 944.538.956.01. A picture of the two latches is shown below; the latch from my 968 (.056.04) is on the right. The rubber surrounding the .056.04 latch is removeable, and it appears I can install the rubber on the .956.01 latch.

Does anyone know if the these latches are interchangeable, and is there is any significance to the different part numbers?

They look identical besides the seal. Remove the seal and put them next to each other and you should get your answer.
