Rich, sorry to hear the bad news. If it ends up being super expensive to fix the 6-speed, 2 options I might consider are buying a 951 tranny, or buying a cheap 968 for ~7k and parting it out (keeping the tranny).

Rich- I had a similar event on my 968 6spd. Mine happened between 3rd and 4th.but the same symptoms. It was an easy fix but I still removed the trans. The portion of the shifting mech when removed from the trans had a roll pin sheered off. I am refering to the selector shaft part #7 that the shifter rod rotates and where the ball dentents or "shift catches" for tension are. I was able to recover the broken pieces becasue they were a press fit and were still in the rod and the rotating gear. replaced the roll pin and back in action.
Also if you haven't removed one recently, remember to slide the clamping sleeve towards the transmission and remove it with the trans and not towards the engine. I can't tell you the head scratching that went on when I did it in reverse... RTM event.
Good luck, if I can help let me know- Mike

The transmission clearance gap from the sleeve to the trans shaft was so small the trans would not drop, and it would hit the spare tire trunk section before clearing the shaft. It kept hanging up on stuff. The sleeve only slides maybe 2 inches or so towards the motor but slides more than double that towards the trans giving you an extra 3 inches or so to drop the trans... once I learned this- it came out and in so much eaiser.
cheers Mike

No problem- it is an EASY thing to check and fix. I think its only three bolts, and the detent or shift catches that unbolt. When the cover and rod come out it is OBVIOUS how it goes together and if it's broken. When mine snapped I was slamming gears and thought OH S$%& ... I had nighmares of trying to find another trans and decided to inspect the components that make the box shift. From the outside since the shift catches still gave the "snap in gear" feel I feared the worse until I realised that the shaft inside was not rotating.. found the broken pin, the rest is history....Good Luck- I wish you a speedy and cheap repair, Mike
