Official 968 D90 and Club Sport Wheel site
Our collective experience can help anyone wanting to use these classic and beautiful wheels. I still love the look and may buy a set...but first I'd want to know what I'd be getting into? And what to look for? Below are some basic questions. Please add to these and/or provide answers based on your experience, even if biased.
What are the primary differences between the Design 90 (D90) and Club Sport Wheels?
Going prices?
Best sources to find and buy them?
Best wheel sizes/tire combinations for the 968?
Will the wheels from 964s (or other Pcars) fit on without fitment issues? If so, how are these resolved?
Of the size options "out there" which make the most sense?
Largest wheel and tires sizes that will fit without messing with the fenders? (and is handling improved or affected somehow?)
Installing 16" D90 or Club Sport Wheels vs the advantages/disadvantages of the newer 17" or "18 wheels that are available?
Common weaknesses to look out for? (cracking, bent rims, ?)
What else to watch out for or consider?

Harvey (and ltc), I'm glad I'm not the only 968 owner who likes the club sport wheels. Aside from the technical benefits, I actually love the look too!
CSs are forged (lighter and stronger) and came only on the 951 S or some 928s (don't know which). D90s are cast (heavier and weaker).
Depends on widths, condition, etc. D90s something like $100-$400. CSs something like $300-$1000+.
Craigslist? IMHO you can never get a wheel deal on rennlist.
The CSs came in 9" rears so get those. Use either the 7" fronts or 8" ones if you can find them. If you want D90s, four 8"s will be good. I like to use 225 on 7s and 255 on 9s.
The 964 6" front will fit a 968, I have these and I have used them before. The 964 8"s also fit, obviously.
are we still talking about d90s and CSs? Or anything?

taller sidewalls will keep ride comfy, and provide more protection to your spindles and bearings (you might not care, but I live where the pavement sucks 90% of my route, so I do care). Also 16" wheels + tires are lighter than bigger wheels + tires... heavy rotating mass is even worse than just plain weight in the car.
I dunno, I guess all wheels can crack but cast wheels are always more susceptible. Note that d90s are painted and therefore can be repainted or touched up. CSs are polished so once a blemish, always a blemish.
The CS is the only 9" wide 16" porsche wheel. And if you can't find CSs you can buy a set of worthless manholes and just grind open the holes. I have seen a set done like this - it's no myth!
Don't forget the medallion and mirror shades. The 80s rule!

I have a set of D-90's with decent Bridgestone RE-730's on them, if anyone is interested. There's just taking up space... Cosmetically, they are okay, iirc. I'll see if I can roll by my storage unit and snap some pics, if y'all want.

Here's some pics of chrome D90s on a volkswagen (those vw guys loooove using our wheels... they seem to prefer our rejects, like d90s, manholes, and phone dials).

Cool post, Harvey.
Club Sports....
Pros: Tough to beat for weight and strength. Aftermarket wheels that offer these qualities are spendy $$$$.
Cons: Tire choice and availability. Support for 16's is dwindling. Limits brake size. As Chris suggested, styling could be construed as antiquated.
My CS are black with painted crests. I think I liked them better stock.

D'oh! That was dumb of me. I meant to say CSs are the only 16" late offset 9" wide wheel.
But I never knew d90s came in 9" wide. No way! Seriously? Well if they came on 90/91 951, then they are surely rare, and harder to find than CS wheels.
There's still plenty of 16" tires available.... just not in 255! You'd have to just put 245s on the 9" rears. It comes out slightly stretched but not too bad. 245 is still pretty wide and a little stretch just means less sidewall flex!

On both a '91 S2 and a '89 951, 9" CS fit on the front with M030 struts w/stock springs. Camber is limited to 1 - 1 1/2 degrees negative depending on the car. 8" CS wheels fit on the front with no problems and 245 tires work great on these rims. Using 255 tires on the front may require some fender modification at the point were the fender meets the bumper cover at the wheel arch (951 & S2). I have several 7, 8 & 9" CS laying around if you are interested.
