John, what kind of paint did you use? Is it something readily available? I have a 94 so i would like to finish the manifold and valve cover in this finish. The early cars have some nice things going.

I didn't paint those parts: they came that way. I think the earlier cars had that finish, and that Porsche went to bare metal later on. I swabbed aluminum engine paint onto the intake manifold with a paper towel and qtip.
In the interest of honesty, here's the unretouched image. (cropped and reduced), followed by the photo as it appears above, with photoshopping:

On mine you can see some spots where the paint is wearing off. The paint has a slight gold hue.
Raj, my fuel rail cover is off and I can send it to you if you want to take it to a paint shop and have it scanned for a custom paint mix.

How soon would you need the rail cover back? I will PM you about it.

I painted the blue car's fuel rail cover and valve cover with silver engine paint from Kragen. First used the engine primer then the paint. It looks slightly more metallic than the above pics, but goes very nicely with the horizon blue metallic paint. On my own car I only did the fuel rail cover, and I hand painted the "porsche" lettering with black engine paint sprayed into a cup, and a hobby paint brush. The "home grown" version, if you will.
I've seen DaveG's engine, powdercoated red covers and intake, man it's nice in a white car.
That's not rust! All the pistons had over 1 mm of carbon deposits caked onto them. I did my best to scrape, chip, and sand it away but in some crevices and edges some brown residue remained. I got it much cleaner than I expected to, and I was very satisfied. You guys should have seen it when I first cracked it open, I thought the pistons were made of lava rock.

You can't go wrong with silver/chrome. If you like red, I think red goes well with white or black.
I have a picture of Dave G's red powder coated engine but I don't know if I should post it.

Typical engine bay: Before eventual transformation
Below is the "before" shot of my engine bay. Pretty typical. I won't have an "after" shot for a while.
The beautiful worked over engine bays shown here are inspiring me to do something extra. Man, the bar sure is high!

Have you hit your head on that hood latch yet?
Grant, all kidding aside, thats amongst the cream of the crop. Does not really get much better than that.

Well that's a hard act to follow but I finally got my bro to take a pic of the blue car's engine, back in San Francisco.
Everything you can see in the engine bay I removed for the post-purchase service, except the two reservoirs and the struts. I don't know why I didn't even think of painting the valve cover and intake.
That piece of red duct tape is a story... Basically the AOS vacuum hose is NLA so I made one. But the hose clamp right there was hitting the hood so I put tape to prevent scratches. Red was all I had - now that I look at it, it looks dumb and will be replaced with black tape asap.
