Jim did a nice job summarizing why the 968 is a great choice as a track car. My set up is very similar to Jim's except I've not gone to a fully adjustable suspension set up. I run Koni's all around.

Best of luck!

Chris,

Are you still planning on going to Laguna Seca this Saturday? I plan on driving my 951 out there in the morning. I will not put it on the track, just hang out and watch you guys have fun.

Ok guys, I've read over the rules for ITR and PT classes and asked around a bit on the PT and IT forums and it seems that my best target for car prep will be ITR as a primary class and PTC as a secondary class since PT is more flexible with its points for mods rules.

ITR only has a couple of cars running in this region, but more expected to join in as the class gains some momentum. Eligible cars and weights are here starting on page 14.

The cars that are currently running are a Z3 (2.5@2800 lbs or 3.0@2800) and an S2000@3005 lbs. I know of another guy running a 92-95 BMW 325i (classed @2765 lbs) in NASA that I could try to get to join the ITR fray. Looks like some fun cars to compete with.

The 968 is classed at 3055 lbs. I've run DEs with the guy driving the 325 and i know the 968 compares favorably with that car. For curiosity's sake, do you guys shave any experience against other cars on the lists?

The E30 M3@2650 lbs and the 911SC@2650 lbs look like they could be some stiff competition.

PTC has only one guy running a 318ti with unknown mods. I might be able to bump my self up to PTB with additional easily reversible mods. What do you guys think is a realistic number for the minimum weight of an ITR class race prepped car with minimal fuel, not including driver? PT base weight with driver is 2910.

Chris,

I've not run PTB but have run TTB (same classification rules). If you plan on jumping into PTB, make sure that you use all of your points to get the car where it needs to be. My race weight was 2,570 at 220 rwhp. With all the mods on my car I was only 2-3 points from being bumped into TTA. At Nationals the top two cars were a very well setup S2000 and an E46 M3 (both being driven by excellent drivers).

The ITR weights are with driver right? I don't see it being hard to get under 3055 with IT prep. You could probably add ballast to reach that number and remove it to run PT. ITR weights are assuming you can get a decent hp bump from prepping the engine. That may not be as easy as it is with say a bmw. The 968 can be competitve with any of them - assuming somebody hasn't spent 30k taking the car to the limit of the rules.

PT will not be the primary target classification, so I will only be able to do PT mods and weight reduction (if possible) that will allow me to easily revert back to ITR rules.

That might possibly make me uncompetitive in PTB, but you can't be uncompetitive when there is really no one else in the class!

Basically, I'll be limited in additional mods for PT and maybe adding ballast for PTC or trimming weight for PTB, but right now I'm not sure what is possible with weights.

Not sure if the ITR weights are with driver. I don't see it stated explicitly in the rules. I'll have to check on that, but I'm assuming it includes driver.

That's my though exactly, add ballast for ITR and remove for PT. Assuming 3055 with driver, minus 200 for driver+gear = 2855.

With ITR mods, I need to add 65 lbs to stay in PTC. That puts the target car weight at 2775 lbs. without driver. Do you guys think this is achievable?

So +65 lbs ballast to run PTC and an additional 80 lbs to run ITR.

It may be hard getting that low but you could definitely get close. The IT rules really restrict what you can do and I don't know of a 968 prepped to IT rules for comparison. My car is about 2550 but I've done not legal for IT stuff.
