Canton Racing filter revisited. (X post)
Several years ago some Rennlisters started to fit these nice permanent units with replaceable filter elements on their 944s to make changing oil more convenient and benefit from the superior filtering capacity.
As it turns out, these units are designed to be used together with a dry sump application and don't have a proper anti drainback valve to keep oil in the filter and lubricate the engine at start up. Instead, they have a rubber flap that deteriorates after a couple thousand miles causing the oil to drain out and create a "dry start" situation at start up which is when lubrication is needed most. Porsche specified a filter with an anti-drainback spring valve as original equipment for a reason. You need lubrication at start up!
I bought one of these Canton Racing units back then and chose not to install it when people started reporting they were having dry starts from using it. I realized the dry starts from not having a proper check valve would do more harm than any benefit in using a better filtering element, so I chose not to try to out engineer Porsche on this one and just use the factory specified filter and change it regularly.
Now I hear the Canton unit is featured in an article in "Exc911ence" magazine and am wondering whether any changes have been made to the filter or the rubber check valve has been replaced with something more effective at keeping the oil in the filter for start up?

No, I didn't see the need for it. I had bought a car with that setup but as you said, it was with an accusump along with it. I removed the accusump and the canton setup.
This was back in 2001.

I thought the element price was pretty pricey considering the Mahle (sp) oem filter is about 5 bucks!!

Raj,
I don't exactly know the advantages of an accusump system as it applies to tracking our cars.
I just heard that they were good "insurance" to have.
Can you explain how it helps to "protect and serve"?
I'm not sure what it really does...and how it might/might not be a good thing for me to have on my track car.
