ADDED HORSEPOWER????

280 should be do-able, assuming you start with 240
the combination of the rs barn chip and airbox mod dave and i worked out bring it up over 20 (actually got there with the racer x chip, which put out less than the rs barn chip), so the remaining 20 should be attainable with the rsbarn header and some head work and/or the new rs barn cams
i am actually anticipating a lot more

The quickest and least expensive mods have been described, viz., airbox (4 holes, etc.), chip and a header. Also, there's no more HP, but increased throttle response with a lightened flywheel.
As aptly noted by the experts above, after those few items mods do get expensive.
If you want a very fast, reasonably priced convertible I'd consider buying an '03 or '04 C5 Corvette (I really like those).

jason - nope - sorry - that one is a tough climb for sure - i think it might be achieveable, but at the cost of streetability - 280 rwhp would mean a good 320 or so at the flywheel, which is likely the absolute limit of this engine in NA form, and with what would certainly be a very spikey curve

thanks guys. Lot's of good info. I figured there would be a few key items to be done to start the slippery slope, as so affectionately referred to here. It's just like my 993...you have to weigh costs to benefits. I'll try to get info on the airbox mod and chips over at the 968forums. Unfortunately, right now it won't let me in. I registered and verified/activated but it won't let me in. keep getting errors. I'll do some more research and find the info. Thanks much for the info. so far

Jim;
The advice provided by others is spot on! I have a 968 that raced in the Fire Hawk series in the mid 90's and it has most of the mod's mentioned. I suggest you start slow and evaluate the impact of each modification as it's made. The costs can get high quickly but the returns marginal.
Good luck!
Joe

Like I already said...I'm new to the 968 and looking for options.
Thanks for any help.

ProMAX 968 7100A and 7700AT Chips
Hi All,
You can still purchase the 968 chip at the special discounted price of $145 USD (it's nearer $200 USD in Europe). Just click on the picture or follow the link below...
The link for Rennlist members to get this special deal is: http://www.promax.eclipse.co.uk/promaxchip_usa.htm
In tests by 9 magazine and by owners elsewhere, power increases of 12bhp to 22bhp have been recorded. 15bhp is typical. Power delivery is smoother and the 7100A and 7700AT chips are designed specifically for US model 968's (ROW cars use the 7100R and 7700RT chips). Model number denotes rpm limit.

Andrew

Hi, I'm considering picking up a 968 cab too and will be doing some power mods. My question basically consist of what sports cars is a basic modded 968 comparable to? Some people say that the car is awefully slow, others are saying that it will outrun similar sports cars like the S2000 or Boxster. So whats a short list of cars that it can compete with in acceleration?
Sorry to hijack, just wondering....

well, my experience with the row7100 chips was virtually identical power/torque curves except for the raised rev limit - back to back with 2 ecus

Silbullet, all you have to do is compare hp/weight for the competition and it will be clear that a boxster S or a S2000 will be much quicker. The difference could easily be a full second for 0-60mph. S2000's consistently run 0-60 in 5.5 secs and same goes for boxster S. I think a standard boxster would be similar in performance to a 968 cabriolet.
