Steering rack install disaster/strut questions/opinions

Okay, so I am getting the 968 cab ready to go for Eureka Springs next weekend, and on the list was swapping in a new steering rack, due to a newly leaking seal. Got the car up in the air, all lines disconnected and tie rod ends off, and three of the four bolts that hold it to the cross member out. The fourth one (drivers side closest to the oil pan), of course, has to snap off, without any real force applied to it. Okay, I'm not happy but can deal with it... Got it drilled out and in the process of running the tap in it, the tap bottoms out and snaps off. Arrggghhh! Now I'm really not happy.
So now that I am removing the crossmember to repair this mess, I figure I may as well do motor mounts. Of course, tiptronic motor mounts are apparently different than regular ones, so I will have to source some on Monday. And of course, since I am that far into it, I may as well replace the struts, which leads me to my question.
I am trying to keep the car as stock as possible, but I see no reason to stick with Boge/Sachs when Porsche offer Koni's as a factory option. I don't want to do the "Koni insert into the Sachs strut housings" modification, so I am looking at tracking down a full blown Koni strut assembly (and of course, matching Koni shocks for the back). Anyone got any factory correct part numbers for Koni's and leads on where to get some by Tuesday? All the reference materials I am finding only show a part number for the Boge/Sachs strut.
Regards, ...Scott

You need to find the M030 struts if you want to go Koni, which can be difficult to source. The koni rears can be had from Paragon for around $240 or so. The Koni conversions to the Sachs housings is likely to be the quickest way to go, as paragon stocks them and could ship them to you and have you ship them your originals as cores. There was a set of Koni struts for sale here in the classifieds, you may want to see if they are still available. Good luck with the project! Are you using sunset porsche for the motormounts?

You can use the specific Koni shocks from the M474 equipment of the 944 S2.
They will always be better than the bad stock units from Sachs and you can reuse 968 springs as 944 S2 have the same spring diameter.
In the process I suggest fitting 968 CS springs. Same stiffness as regular 968 springs but shorter.
I have had M474 Koni shocks and 968 CS springs on my S2 for 3 years and I've been very happy with the stiffness/comfort compromise they offer.
I would steer clear from M030 shocks as they may be too "hard" for normal road use and may prove overkill on a garage queen.
As far as originality is concerned M030 was not available on cabs too.

Unlike M030 springs, 968 CS springs have a constant diameter and a constant spring rate (28 N/mm) ; they fit right in place of regular 944 S2 and 968 springs.
They are coded with blue dots and their part number is 944.343.531.09.904 (see euro section of PET).
They are cheaper than the popular H&R alternative - at least they were when I bought them.

Thanks for the feedback! Due to time constraints, I have decided to put this on the backburner until after I get back from PCA-Palooza in Eureka Springs, AR this weekend, but I will post when I decide which route I am taking. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
