Just wait until the Excellence article comes out... that should be good for 15-20 pages of posts

Yikes!

If I'd known installing a performance chip was fraught with all these potential problems, I'd still be stock. When I installed the Autothority chip in my 928, it was a non-event. I've never dynoed it, and I can't really tell any difference in performance..but I do smell more unburned gas at idle..but road trip mpg is about the same. I do feel a difference (I think) with the chip in the 968...then again, maybe I'm just goosing it more? Unless you play around in the high revs, I'm not sure a performance chip is worth the cost.

I'm getting 26.5 mpg. Think I should get a new O2 Sensor? Could that upset the Motronic?

Harvey, if you are getting that kind of mileage, you are not goosing it enough

Or maybe you don't have the right chip.

Interesting you say that Harvey. I felt a noticeable difference in the way the car pulled from 4000rpm on with the Promax chip.
Does your chip manufacturer have a money back guarantee? I would suggest you return it for a Promax chip if you don't notice a significant difference. Ofcourse the same rule should apply for the Promax chip as well to be fair.
Regards.

Thanks, Raj,

I have high respect for your advice but, for right now, I don't dare touch the chip as all seems to have sorted itself out. However, if I get another blast of smoke, it'll be a different story. I think I will, however, buy a new O2 sensor and am waiting on my new B&B muffler to be built and shipped. I was told that B&B makes them on demand for the 968 now.

Perhaps I don't need a new 02 Sensor but it doesn't appear to be very new. However, if there's a chance of that confusing the performance chip/Motronic combo...I'll pass.

Harvey, who told you to change the sensor? I doubt that is your problem. Save your $$$. The car runs fine so how could it be the O2 sensor?

I dunno. I had just heard that changing sensors at 60k miles is a tuneup thing. The car is running good so maybe I don't need to. Some people say they get better than 26.5mpg and if a sensor change would improve that it might be worth it. On the other hand, others say they get worse mpg. The car's a hobby but perhaps I should save the $$ for when something for real goes out on it....like steering rack, bearings, or something. Owning a 928 one gets jumpy about things. I have a complete set of spare brains, relays, fuel pump, coil, etc. for both cars. I suspect that someday the 968 will start requiring these parts about as often as the 928 does. But I hope not...

Harvery, I see what you mean. I would definitely stock up on a spare DME, MAF and you should have a spare DME relay in the car at all times. Both items can be had relatively cheap when you don't need them but cost an arm and a leg when you do.
