OK it's almost 2 years later.
It's funny when you go back and read your old posts. Sometimes it's like 'why did I say/do that?' Well this is where I'm at, just for people to know. The car just hit 170,500 miles, still on that old chain with new pads. There has been no issue at all. In fact I have not touched the engine since Feb '06, thankfully. I know, I know, I said I would check the chain every couple weeks, but I have not opened it up once! I let a friend (chris_luckett who owns a 968 with similar mileage) drive the car and he said the car is lacking power... This could be due to a stretched chain (and thus bad intake timing), but I think it could also be because his car has a race suspension and lightened body, and my fat *** was in the passenger seat while he drove my car.
So it looks like the original chain is good for at least 170k miles (YMMV). I plan on having the head off this summer for a "headgasket job" and I'll finally remove the old chain then. I don't want to find out exactly when this chain will break. Yes, I should have changed the chain while I had it open...

I'll take anyone up on that offer..
I am in the midst of swapping heads on my 944S2 (968 head on the way) and need to borrow(?) a flywheel lock (one that fits the S2, not the 968). Any offers? I'm in Redwood Shores (mid-peninsula)

Miles, I am very close to you and I have the 944 flywheel lock.
And as an update to the thread, I did change the chain. And I bought another 968 flywheel lock to replace my lost one, so no more screwdrivers, for now......

I am in the process of replacing my clutch today. When I opened the box of parts I recieved from Sunset I realized The flywheel lock was not sent along. I s there a way of doing this job successfully without the flywheel lock? I would appreciate any help and if you would not mind whoever can call me with any advice or help. my # is (917) 359-6384.
