Default Power steering delete

Does anyone know whether Porsche offered P/S delete as an option on the 968? I would like to use a manual steering rack on my 968 track car, but do not wish to make any modification that would bump the car up from PCA "F" class.

Now, I know that the factory had built some race cars that probably didn't utilize P/S; however I'm not sure that helps me. E.g., a Firehawk 968 is an "E" class car to start with.

So, if one could order a 968 (not a racecar) w/o P/S then I'm okay. Otherwise, I shall have to check with the chief scrutineer.

Thanks.

Richard

I believe the early Turbo Cup cars had P/S delete. I seem to recall they put the P/S back in the later cars, MUCH kick-back when the inside wheel would lift and then touch back down.

Hi Dave,

You know, the car feels okay with the P/S. I liked the feel of the manual rack in the corners, but enjoy the ease of the P/S around the paddock. So if I can't replace the steering rack, it's no big deal. Really just one of those personal preference things.

I'm with you, would prefer to ditch the weight and added slop myself. Not sure if there was a delete on the 968's.

Hi Richard (Hi Dave)

i believe power steering was std equipment on 968's with NO option to delete. I suppose it is possible that option to delete existed in europe which might make it okay with pca here, but doesn't seem likely to me that porsche would offer 968 street cars without P/S.

i can also get you email address for Donna Amico who is the pca person to ask. perhaps they would allow it regardless without a bump up.

Hey Norm,

How goes it? Small P/S leak, a couple of drops of coolant leaking, and a stress crack in my windshield are cutting into the use of my 968 (now shod with snow tires).

Time to do a little winter work here in Chicago.

Since it's permissible to remove the P/S belt, I'm thinking that so long as I don't remove the pump, I may very well be permitted to utilize a manual rack.

I've already e-mailed Donna @ PCA, so I should have a definative answer in a couple of weeks if not sooner.

do you really have snow shoes on your baby? i've heard of rain tires on a race car, but never snow tires

are you sure you don't want a camry with 192k like me?

windshield is a bummer....i had to do a new windshield this past spring from a tiny chip from last winter that spread to be 2 ft within 48 hours.

are you savin for billet hubs yet?

Thinking about it. Many scary pictures of exploded units out there.

Yup, been working in Peoria and driving the VW. Heated seats are nice, but a 3 hour drive in it is BORING. Give me the obnoxious track suspension any day! The 968 actually makes heat faster anyway.

Snow tires + race car = Practical Vehicle! At least that's my pitch to the team owner

Rich,

I can't help you with the rules of PCA, but it was pretty much a no-brainer to remove the p/s system from my car...plus there are always plenty of guys out there willing to buy the pump and rack that you remove.

That, plus the idea of one less thing to worry about, helped me make my decision...Of course you're also interested in what the "Scrutineers" have to say.

Best,

Jason

Received a quick reply from PCA - it's a "no-no". So I will continue with the P/S.

Dave,

I found that OEM Windshields can be obtained very reasonably form the Sekurit Saint Gobain warehouse in Ohio. The price was about 1/3rd of the cost of that quoted by Sunset. The only downside is that they want to sell to glass installers not to individuals

More info is in this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/968-forum/163967-oem-968-windshields-from-sekurit-saint-gobain.html

Good info Bruce/Norm. I will ping my window glass guy to see if he can get the OEM at the lower cost. Darn crack grows with the changes in temperature, has a mind of its own.
