Default Disappearing oil?

So I have no oil leaks and I don't burn any oil, but somehow, oil keeps magically disappearing. My oil light will come on every few weeks and I check, and sure enough the oil level has gone down. Nothing scary, but it's kinda annoying. Is this normal? This is my first Porsche so I have no frame of reference, especially with the 968.

How much are you driving "every few weeks" and how much are you adding?

The manual says that using 1 liter per 1000 kilometers is acceptable.

Changing the oil yearly / ~ 5000 miles I put in 7 quarts which fills up to the top mark on the dipstick, then a little more than half way through the light will come on at which time I add up to a quart to get back up to the top of the stick.

It's a daily driver, so going by what you are doing, it adds up. Where exactly does the oil go though is what I am wondering..

Thanks!

I am not sure where it goes, it certainly does not drip out the bottom or make smoke out the tail pipe.

Our 968s were designed to loose a little oil.

A Porsche engine, operating properly, will 'consume' oil. As long as the usage stays under the manual's guidelines - 1 quart every 650 miles or so - you are fine. If your consumption increases then you either have a leak or are starting to burn oil (different than consuming) and probably need a compression check followed by some sort of valve/piston/ring repair.

Checking at every gas fill up is a good habit so that you can get a better handle on your exact mileage/consumption rate. At 71,000 miles I am consuming about 1 quart every 1000 or so miles.

Fair enough! Thanks for the information. I've put 2700+ miles on it since I bought it and have put 1.5 quarts in it since, so everything is normal

hehe - I just wait till the light goes on, its very reliable.
(kidding, I do check occasionally)

Car has nearly 140K miles on it now, and I go through a quart every 1.5K or so.

One thing to check, I went to change my plugs last night and there is about 3 inches of oil in each of the plug cavities!

Yes, I'm gonna fix the cam cover gasket this weekend...

If you have any trouble whatsoever, let me know via PM or e-mail. I have plenty of pictures and this is all fresh on my mind, since I did the job within the past month. Good luck!
