Default 968 & Late 944 Windshields Interchangeable?

Does anyone know for sure if the windshields of 968 coupes and late 944s are the same size?

I'm trying to find an affordable replacement for my 968 race car. All the glass places I've tried (Safelite etc.) say it is a dealer only item. $$$

I could swear that the glass is the same size as 951's and 944S2's etc. With a tape measure they measure the same to me. But the glass companies don't think they are interchangeble because they are listed with different "block sizes" 29x55 for 944 and 29x57 for the 968. I think the block size for the 968 as listed is incorrect.

Porsche lists them with slightly different part #s.
944.541.011.15 thru 17 for 968
944.541.011.12 thru 14 for 944

*Block size was explained to me as being the dimensions of the window if you laid it on the floor and measured the window's outside dimensions on the floor.

Thanks,
Eric

Eric,

I can not tell you if they are the same. But I can tell you that Autover has an office in Ohio that can sell your installer the real thing without having to go through Porsche. My new cab windshield was installed for less than $300 using this route.

All the info is in this post https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ght=windshield

Thanks Bruce. I had seen that post. I might try that.

The glass on the race car gets busted at least once a year and I would like find a more generic and readily available alternative as a first option.

Eric,

My experience is that they are NOT the same. I recently had to replace mine due to removing my seats...

The fellow who was building my cage said he would do it for me, and ordered a 944 windshield because it was less expensive than the 968.

It did not fit well and I was not happy with the fitment.

I'll see if my mechanic can fix it while he is doing other stuff to my car.

Other than the tinting, I thought all the glass (for the coupes) was the same size. But when airbags were introduced, the lower cowl (where the dash meets the glass) had the sheet metal lip removed (that had been added starting with the ’85.5). These airbag compatible windshields then came with a seal/spacer (approx 3/8" thick) already affixed to the entire perimeter of the glass, thus moving the glass forward/flush with the molding without the need of the metal bottom cowl piece or the rubber 3 sided top spacer that the started with the 85.5 as well.

So the 924 and the ‘earlys’ and sat in the frame – recessed. Then starting with ‘85.5, the bottom metal lip was added that mated to a thick rubber spacer that wrapped around the 3 sides until sometime in ’87 when again the frame looked like the ‘earlys’ but the glass came with a thick seal already applied to all 4 sides. All I know is it's confusing.

Thanks Jason. That is the kind of info I'm looking for. Did the 944 windshield fit different or was it poorly installed? In what way were you not happy with the fitment?

I'm betting you can use the cheap glass and about 15' of 3/8th" black vacuum tubing stuffed with a solid copper wire (maybe 12 gauge stripped from a spare piece of Romex) so the tube can be formed around the perimeter. Then neatly seal it all with good ol' black silicon.

I tried the Autover route and they do have the coupe windshields (FW00710 GGY) in stock. Thanks to Bruce for the lead. The cost to my glass shop (w/tax and shipping) was $340. If you are local to Ohio then it will be a much better deal w/o the high shipping costs. It beats the $518 I was quoted for the dealer price. These costs are without installation. However, we were able to find one somewhat local windshield for $385. So I'll go with that and not wait for shipping.
It is much easier if you have insurance, then can just go thru the dealer and not worry about it.

I found Autover to avoid the 6 week wait for Porsche glass. The cost was covered by insurance.

I will go the Autover route again next time.
