Question 968 Tire Puzzle

I just bought a 968 ('94) on which all four tires were Pirelli 225/50 ZR 16" SuperSport 7000s. Bringing the car home, I had an emergency flat in Resume Speed, Missouri and had no choice but to let WalMart put two H-Rated Good Year American Eagles on the car. It was the only tire that would fit that was in stock and they put them on the front...they scrape slightly...but it was better than running on the rims.

My question: The manual says to run 205/55 ZRs on the 7" wide front rims and 225/50s on the 8" rears. My dilemma is deciding (1) whether to toss the American Eagles and buy a different set of tires for all four wheels (but in the proper recommended sizes) or (2) just move the new American Eagles to the rear rims and put the same type tire on the front..but in the recommended size.

Anyone have experience with this? Recommendation? I'm not averse to sticking with H-rated tires since I won't be going more than 130 mph terribly often and since I really want my next set of tires to be QUIET. The Pirellis are really loud. The American Eagles seem to be quieter than the Pirellis. Seems like I heard of another tire recently that was really getting a following that was both good and quiet.

What do you suggest?

Thanks,

Harvey

Harvey, I would say move them to the back. You will hve new backs and can get matching fronts for it. As long as the tire fulfils your requirements, stay with it. Why waste the money.

I suggest that you look at the inside of the wheels and determine if you have two 7JX16s and two 8JX16s and make sure that the 8" wide wheels are used for the rear and the 7" for the front.

It is fine to have 225/50/16s on the 7" wheels and 245/45/16s on the 8" wheels I do so myself.

I am surprised by the scraping, do you know if the car is lowered or otherwise modified in a way that might cause the slight scraping?

I also run 225-50-16 on the front with no issues. If you are aggressive the rears may not last a long time.

I'll check to see where the scraping is before I decide on tire size. Like I said, the scraping seems to be minor. The old tires didn't seem to scrape on a tight turn so I don't know. I'll check closer. Thanks.

go to tirerack.com and check their specs on different brand and size tires to determine if they fit or not
