should work

you will need the half-axle shafts from the turbo as well

however the turbo transaxle R & P gearing will reduce your 'off-the-line' acceleration

The 968 transmission is based on the 6-speed G50. I'm 99% certain that you can't use a 944/951 diff in it.

the 968 box is a G44 not a G50 (though that does not preclude the origin of the box as a G50 - i don't know about that one) - any idea what parts, if any, might interchange though?

misread this post...I thought the whole transaxle was being swapped

the 5 speed was manufactured by Audi & the 6 speed by Getrag

I'd be very surprised if any internals could be interchaged

As Tom mentioned, the boxes were made by different manufacturers. The 968 transmission is a 6-speed G50 architecture. This is a different from the 5-speed 944/951, and so you cannot swap diffs between them.

To double check, I called Guard Transmission this morning [http://www.guardtransmission.com/]. They confirmed that there is a difference between the 944/951 and 968.

I also checked the Quaife website [http://www.quaifeamerica.com/differe...diff_apps.htm], and you can see that there are different diffs listed for the 944/951 and 968.

quaiffe link didn't work

just double-checked the workshop manual - both it and the part number confirm that the 968 box is a G44 and not a G50 - if the G44 is G50 architecture, does that mean it uses the same gears and such?

Though the 968 external transmission assembly might have a 944 p/n and G44 designation, the guts of a 968 transmission are G50 based. This is different from the guts of the 944's G44 transmission.

I.e. not all G44s share the same architecture (apparently)

So the diffs can't be swapped, but I don't know about the gears. Maybe they can...

Powerhaus II [ http://www.phii.net/ ] would be a good source of info (if someone has the time to call them).

I can confirm 100% that they are different and you can't do it. A friend with a shop here in KC and I tried it once. It doesn't fit.

Karl, GREAT work on that 951 Cup article in Excellence. First issue of that mag that I HAD to buy in a couple of years! lol And to say I am jealous of you getting to drive that car is an understatement.

Regards,

wow is this getting confusing - ok, so it's marked a G44, the manual calls it a G44, but it's really a G50? but the G50 gears might not work?

i'm hoping the G50 gears will work, so i can maybe play with ratios and such

I agree its confusing...

BTW, when I said "So the diffs can't be swapped, but I don't know about the gears. Maybe they can...", I should have explicitly said that I don't know if you can swap gears between a 944/951 tranny and a 968 tranny.

As regards whether G50 gears can be changed in the 968 tranny... I've no idea.

If anyone has the time, they should call Powerhaus II [ http://www.phii.net/ ]. They do all sorts of gear sets for Porsches and I'm sure they'd know the full story.

Karl.

i'll do that - i almost used theier close ratio set when i did my box - had i have known that it was a G50 and not the indicated G44, i would have done more homework - looks like i get to do it now - i'll start by matching part numbers from both boxes and see what's really going on in there

for starters, and so i can start my own digging, where did you come across the info indicating that it is not the G44 as specified in the manual and part number? just powerhouse and quaiffe? not anything from porsche?
