Default Pinion Bearing Failure. NTB

Hello All: I'll be soon be joining the 968 crowd. I am replacing my s2 with a 1993 968. The 968 that I am looking at has 85K with all mantainence done. I am worried about the pinion bearing failing especially since the early history of this car is a bit unclear. Is it common for a 968 to have this problem at this mileage? All help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have owned mine for the better part of 100K miles and during that time have not experienced the problem. Polls that have been done on 968.net have indicated that the failure most often happens between 45K and 75K miles, though several were reported in the over 125K range. Best thing to do is put $1,500 aside for that day if and when it happens. Many believe that the market has adjusted for the problem already by the 968 having a slightly lower price on Kelly Blue Book since most 968 buyers are aware of the problem. The failure is not known to happen again after the bearings have been reset. Those 968 that have had their pinion bearings reset, as well as have complete other documentation, sell at a slight premium over what they might otherwise command. Though I have not experienced the problem, I am having mine reset while in the process of a major upgrade.

Yeah, depends if the trans is out of the car or in the car.

I believe what Raj is getting to is that a $1,500 repair would be if you had the tranmission out of the car and does not include the cost of removing / reinstalling. Hopefully you have someone in your area. If mine ever goes I will have to ship it to be repaired.

you can get the job done for about 750 at a lot of independent shops around here with it out of the car, assuming nothing but the bearing needs to be changed - most shops around here will charge about 900 to r&r the box - that's 1650- we got ron's done for about that all at the same shop - shouldn't be too far off anywhere else

If the $750 was for it out of the car, can I assume 1650 was for it in the car or am I mistaken. Can you explain r&r. thanks.
