Default Any tips on changing cap and rotor?

Its time to finish up the 60 service before Parade next week.

So far I have

Changed timing and balance belt
new plugs
new clutch, pressure plate and associated bearings
new dme relay
new thermostat
replaced hcv with audi part
rebuilt all four calipers
new pads and rotors
new front wheel bearings
cleaned, repacked and rebooted damaged cv boot
replaced and bled brake / clutch fluid (twice)
changed transaxle fluid
new fuel filter
and other things I have forgotten about

I just ordered the cap and rotor and P221 tool to allow my local shop to align the wheels.

Does anyone have tips or know of anything I should watch out for in changing the cap and rotor?

pretty simple and straightforward - remember to orient the cap first and then change the wires one at a time to avoid mixing them up - be prepared to have to reach down to grab one of the little screws that you dropped and landed in the belly pan right out of reach

Bruce, nothing should drop anywhere as all the associated hardware is built so that it does not completely remove itself from the cap or rotor. The rotor is held by 3 cheeseheads and you cannot remove them complete and the distributor cap is held on by 3 flat headed screws.
The rest has already been stated.
Good luck.

yeah, may be my bad there - i pulled the cap twice - once to check on one of the belts - it may have been one of those screws i was thinking about that dropped and got down there

Bruce, where did you find the alternate HCV? I presume this is the fabled brass one -- I'm sure the answer is somewhere in the archives, but I thought I'd ask.

I saw a picture of a red distributor cap a few weeks ago: anyone know where those can be found?

I have not seen one, but it seems like it would be very easy to paint.
