Hello everyone I am new here and strongly considering buying a 968 tip. There has been a lot of service and some routine things replaced such as timing belt, heater valve and etc. The engine runs well but there is a rattle coming from the rear exhaust when engine is on and in park. Here is the video… can anyone give a bit insight to what this may be before I purchase?

You might want to start by checking the heat shield above the muffler. With any Porsche, regardless of records, a PPI from a reputable shop is money well invested.

I agree with @DSMblue , check the heat shield. You mention that there are some service records available. I would check when the damper plate was replaced. The noise sounds a bit like the beginning of the damper plate failing. They typically start going bad around 65,000 miles before they ultimately fail and need replacing. It's a pretty pricey repair (for both the part and labor), so factor that in if the damper needs to be replaced now, or in the near future. Unfortunately, all damper plates fail and will need replacing in 968 tiptronics. Having said that, I love the tips and have owned two. I just recently purchased my second. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Cheers!

I'd suggest checking the exhaust system, especially the muffler, heat shields, and any mounting brackets. And the damper plate could indeed be the culprit here. If it's worn or damaged, it can produce rattling noises, especially when the engine is idling.

Regarding the part number, the original part number is the one you have and its in the PET. Looks like it has been superseded with 944 116 065 06.
It's been a while since I sourced a damper. I replaced two on my 92 968 and then I opted to have the car modded to use a 944 clutch plate, along with a host of other 944 transmission parts required for the mod. This effectively replaced the 968 damper. I put over 100k miles on the car with that mod and had no issues. The damper on my newly acquired 93 has low miles and I'm debating on whether to transfer the 944 clutch mod over to it at some point.

Hello bbain,
If you go through this mod again, please post more information, photos, parts list. I know its a pain the rear, but would be very helpful for future use. I've heard of folks wanting to have a solid disc made to replace the damper, but not this solution. I have not seen or have any further knowledge of a solid disc used, or if it is feasible from a flexibility and noise stand point. Why use the clutch solution? Cost? Noise? Already been engineered? Sorry to hit you with a bunch of questions, but I'll have to do mine again at some point, and you're information will help us tip owners.

A friend was discussing the 944 clutch mod with me recently.
