Need help with Instrument Panel
I am trying to remove my instrument cluster to see if I can fix a poorly working odometer. (Slips once in a while). I have removed the front black piece and the screws to the cluster, but it doesn't want to come out of the small space. Do you have to remove the wiring first? How? There seems to be a white plastic "shelf" on the back of the cluster that is preventing its removal. What now?
Thanks in advance

The way to remove the cluster is to remove the phillips screws in the back. There should be a total of 9-10 screws that are also 8mm on the outside. Once you remove these screws, you should be able to pull the plastic rear section. from there, its just a couple of additional screws holding the rest together.
The way you did it is not the easiest or the best way to do it.

Thanks Raj, but I am not that far along. I cannot get the cluster out of the dash. There is no way I can get to the screws yet. How do you remove the wires? Do you have to take off the steering wheel?
Ooops, sorry. I went too far

Ok, there are tabs on each side of the wire connectors. There are 3 connectors total. You need to push on these tabs to have the connector pull itself off the socket. You will see what I mean when you look at the connectors on teh back of the cluster. Each connector will have a small arm on each side that needs to be pushed and when you push it, it automatically pulls the connector off.
Let me know if it made any sense

Raj: I am trying to change the dash lights on my 968. You mentioned the way Jim was doing it was not the best or easiest. What would your suggestions be?
Thank you,

Jim & Raj: Since my car has an airbag, I am trying to do this without removing the steering wheel. I have the trim around the gauges out, and the four screws holding the gauge cluster out. It just doesn't seem to want to work the cluster out. So. I thought I would ask for help. I have gone through the other posts where it refers to opening the clips. I can see and reach (I think) one set of two clips, when looking at the gauge cluster from the front, on the bottom right. Are theses the clips being referred to? I apologize for my lack of skill here.
Jim: Are you referring to Rajs' post about removing the 9 -10 phillips screws in the back? Is that referring to the back of the gauge cluster? I do have a copy of the 968 service manual. I might try to look in there. Also, any suggestions on getting that cluster out?
Thanks for the suggestions.

instrument lighting is on my list for this year, thought I would be able to sneak my instrument cluster out without removing the steering wheel, but it seems awful snug. so on to plan b, will the airbag light need to be reset after re-installation ?
